so i called the bank today (keb) asking to have a joint account for my wife and i (actually for visa purposes to help with my wife applying for an australian visa)....

and the bank says...sure, you can have a joint bank accout, here's the rules...1) you can't have an ATM or debit card 2) you can only withdraw cash from the branch where you opened the bank account 3) no internet banking allowed

wtf? banks, why dont just come out and say you dont like joint bank accounts. wouldn't that be easier...

We tried to open an joint account as well, just seems it not a done thing here.

If the Aussie visa is similar to NZ, immigration is looking for proof of relationship, a history together and having a joint account is just one piece of their puzzle. Immigration is trying to establish a timeline of your relationship to make sure its genuine.
Makes it real hard when the stuff they want is not the norm in Korea.

No joint bank accounts that I'm aware of here.

We opened an account at Kookmin for this very purpose. At the time, there could be two or more names on the account, each with their own chop (not a signature account.) If there were only two names, they could both use the same chop. I could do counter and passbook transactions at any bank branch, but never had an ATM card or Internet banking.

We both transferred money into this account and then used this account to pay the rent.

Open a joint bank account, put in 1000 won, and never use it again.

Why not just open two? Are you THAT desperate to share your money or something?

If you are using the account for purposes of immigration to a western country, as some of us above have, you probably should show money going in and out of the account to show your co-mingling of financial resources. We each put a few hundred thousand won in each month and used it to pay the rent and utility bills.

use facebook as proof of relationship. There is a date stamp on every pic you post, and as such will document your time together, as well as the adventures.

For whatever reasons, facebook is rarely used to document this type of relationship. If a couple applying for a marriage-based visa are already together, they expect something more "official." That said, copies of handwritten postal mail greeting cards sent to the married couple sent from friends and family are often considered evidence.

However, for a fianc� visa, especially if the couple may have met online, e-mail exchange or chat transcripts are expected/accepted.

I know this is stupid, but this is how the immigration game is played in different places. No apostilled university transcripts in this game!

Yikes. The husband and I were going to start a joing banking account to pay the bills and for internet banking at KEB this week, as we had been told that it was the most foreigner friendly. It looks like we'll have to stick to our separate accounts. What a pain.

KEB has been excellent for me for everything EXCEPT the joint account issue.
