After almost 5 years here in Korea.. working at the same company..I am soon to be leaving Korea and I still have an active visa and ARC card until January 2012. I have a round trip ticket to Nepal.. because that was the cheapest option when I was buying a ticket. I have been thinking a lot about whether or not to turn in my arc card at immigration when I exit. At the moment I am not planning to return to my current job and I am not really planning on coming back. But I would like to maybe leave that option open. I mean, I might change my mind and decide to come back and find a job in December. The chances of that are slim but there is nonetheless a chance.
So, my question is this.. If I do not turn in my ARC card when I leave and then for whatever reason I do not decide to come back to Korea.. what can I do about my ARC card? Can I mail it in to Immigration at that time? Can I just keep it? If I do keep it and then 6 months on.. or a year later want to come back is this going to make a problem for me? I am just trying to make the best choice possible...

You can keep it when you leave but it also means that you won't be able to get a new job until it expires (should you decide to return).

If you are NOT coming back, have time left on it and do not turn it in when you leave then you will have a souvenir (you don't need to mail it back).

IF you keep it and do decide to return to Korea AND you use it to re-enter then you will be in violation of immigration law (should that fact be discovered) and it would complicate ALL future work visas.

Thanks a lot!

I was only interested in keeping it based on the slim chance that I might come back before it expires. If I were to come back afterwards I would not be using it to re-enter. I was more concerned if keeping it would cause any problems in processing a new visa. If that were to be the case then sure I would mail it in or something. I had read somewhere else that failing to turn in the card would result in a 100,000 won fine..

So do you think it would make a problem for future job visas to keep it.. knowing that I will not be coming back until after it expires? I mean will they be upset that I had kept it when applying for a new work visa?

I don't want to burn any bridges here.

If you keep it you won't be able to get a new visa till it expires (even if you do mail it back). Immigration won't issue a new visa confirmation number while you have an uncanceled and unexpired ARC. That is the only potential pitfall of your plan.

AFTER it expires it won't make any difference whether or not you turned it in.
