|
|
I live in an officetel. It's a pretty posh place.
For the last week I've noticed at night my apartment gets really hot, despite the A/C being on full blast.
Now, I'm a very warm person. I'm hot year round. Summer here is a humid hell for me. Thinking my A/C was broken I had the building repair man come check it out. He explained to me that the building turns off the air at midnight and it doesn't come back on again till 7am.
WTH?!!??!?!
For the last week, I've been sweating in my bed. I can't sleep when it's this hot. How can a building turn off the air in summer? It's summer for Pete's sake! It's my house, I'm paying the electric bill, I should be able to have the air whenever I want it. I don't care if it's expensive, I must be comfortable in my own house.
Has anyone had an experience with this? I'm going to complain to the building managers daily until I get the A/C on 24/7. I will picket their office if I have to. I'm even considering down grading out of the officetel into an old style villa as long as it has my own A/C I can control.
This is nuts. What kind of idiot turns off the A/C in summer?!?! |

You have my sympathy -- AC in both the apartment and classroom is one of my non-negotiable non-teaching issues. If I couldn't control my own classroom temperature, and that of my home, then I wouldn't take the job....
That sucks. I hope you get it turned on for you. |

You live in a building where the heat and A/C is controlled by the building owners. So you probably pay a lot less in Management fees and etc...
You won't get them to turn it on, because everyone probably knew the conditions before moving in. |

If you're from 'a desert', you would know that dry heat and moist heat are two entirely different animals, and affect people from 'non-deserts' differently. |

I've lived in New York City as well for four years. Humidity is worse than triple digits in dry heat HOWEVER, right now Seoul is NOT hot during the evenings, certainly no "soaking in my own sweat" hot like OP is getting at. hell last night was a nice light breeze and I woke up an hour earlier because I was cold!
Any more questions mr. weatherman?
lol

Buy a portable A/C machine. Works like a charm. You can sometimes find used ones on craigslist. |

if you're from the desert, then you should be used to pretty chilly nights. |

Others, your opinion on whether it is truly hot or not is irrelevant. OP wants his aircon on. It's his apartment; why shouldn't he have aircon?
OP, do you have the AC unit in your apartment? Or is it just a vent from somewhere central? If it's central then you should definitely complain to your building office (as you mentioned you'd do). Get your school to complain as well. Nothing is worse than being deprived of sleep by being too hot or too cold.
Edit: spelling.

i'm shocked at your tone of response. i would've thought you'd tell the op to get a fan or something. |

I have a question: how do you know what the OP's room temperature is like? Some buildings retain heat very well, and if you're from a cold region, 29-30c when its humid can be miserable. Not everyone experiences temperature the same as you. |

Last night late, I couldn't sleep. I went walking around my neighborhood at 2 am. I had my A/C on. But when I stepped outside, the muggy heat hit me like an oven. It was really uncomfortable. But there are many one rooms and villas around. Some had their windows open, but I don't think I heard many air cons going. Sometimes, I think these people are nuts. They just have an aversion to turing them on at night. But I sleep with mine on everynight just as I'm sure most other weigookins do. Strange.
Guess you should prob get your own and get it installed. Prob cost you some money, but would be more than worth it. I would do that if I were in your shoes. However, I'd prob renew and stay at the school for a second year to get my money's worth out of my big purchase. The ones that hang on the wall are not too bad in price but installation may cost more. I'm guessing total 500,000 to 700,000 for the unit and installation. Good luck whatever you decide. |

Westerners moving to a new country and demanding that it be exactly like home.
Got a good chuckle out of the people in this thread
I can't blast the AC all night 22 celcius!? That's it, I'm pulling a runner!

Really?

What exactly is unreasonable about this? I pay my electric and gas too. If I want to take a 30 minute hot shower every morning and I pay for it, what business is that of my building or my neighbors or anyone else in this country?
If AC is provided and a tenant is paying the electric bill, then he or she should be able to run it as much as they want.
What you are saying is absurd. Why are you blaming the OP? Who exactly decides the allowable amount of AC or when it is 'too hot'?
I say you tell the management that if they start paying your bill they can choose the usage; as long as YOU are paying, you want the choice of AC at any time. If they refuse, go to the school. |
