|
|
Hi,
Tried to search for this topic but either search function not working or it didn't exist. So, apologies if it's already been dealt with somewhere.
My question is, if I broke a contract (as in, "defected" from school in the middle of the night with no notice--I had a good reason, believe me) 14 years ago, would I be able to work as an ESL teacher in Korea today? I was employed as an ESL teacher in a private school in Daegu.
Thank you. |

Yes, if you can meet all the new requirements (CBC, etc.), you can come. The chance of any problem from your previous job is essentially zero. |

| 14 years ago? Oh boy, I don't know, man. Knowing how good they are at keeping records, you're probably up poop creek without a paddle. You're name is probably on milk cartons in By The Way, 7-11, etc. You name it, man. |

Thank you for replies (sarcasm from WadRUG'naDoo aside). I guess it would be best not to mention that i had ever taught there as well?
I believe I'm totally qualified (English degree and 120 hour TESL Canada certificate). Not sure what CBC is. |

| I've heard from reliable sources that if something like this is more than 3 years old, K-immi doesn't care at all. |

CBC is a criminal background check.
You should check out the threads on the new requirements to teach in Korea. |

You need a criminal records check from the RCMP showing no record found.
It must be certified by the Korean consulate that has jurisdiction where you live.
You also need to get a copy of your degree notarized (certified as a true copy) and then have that certified by the Korean consulate. This will also require you to have 1 or 2 "official" sealed copies of your university transcripts.
You will need to fill in a self medical indicating any potential problems (you will undertake a real medical that includes drug screening after you arrive and before you can get your ARC).
If you are looking at working in a public school the list is even longer.
As to mentioning your previous experience, immigration will have you on file so don't deny it on the visa application.
Don't worry about it on your resume unless it was one of the major chains (like YBM). chances are that any mom-n-pop hagwan or privately owned franchise from 14 years ago (pre IMF) would be long gone by now or certainly have changed owners at a minimum.

Sorry to trouble you with such a fine point, but if I have a contact in Ottawa, is it possible to get the documents verified at the embassy instead of the consulate? I received my original visa from the embassy, not the consulate. |

If you are in Korea and the CBC is from the national RCMP (mail service) then yes.
Your degree yes IF it was notarized as a true copy by a notary in Ottawa.
(don't forget the "official" transcripts) when you get it sent for certification.

How about the records check from the Winnipeg Police with the Vulnerable Sector Search done by the RCMP?
Thanks again. |

Then it needs to be done by the K-consulate that has jurisdiction over Winnipeg (perhaps Toronto?).
