I am quite curious to see the future of the education industry in Korea and I was wondering what your thoughts were, particularly related to the new and more strict visa requirements.
Here are some of my observations:
-A significant rise in the demand for Kyopo instructers especially in areas related to business English
-Significant rise in the demand for F2 visa holders, especially since the rate of marriage between foreigners and Koreans is rising
-Increased part-time jobs, especially related to business English (again, higher demand for f2-f4)
-I might be wrong on this observation, but it does seem like wages may have inched up a decent amount. I see much fewer 1.8 jobs and an increasing amount of 2.2, 2.3 + housing
*-Again, I might be wrong on this too, but it seems like there are more jobs being offered that do not support housing but do include a housing allowance in the contract.
What I really wonder about is the effects of the new and strict visa requirements, especially since the year is half way over and teachers will not be able to do a second transfer of their visa without the FBI background check.
On a side note, I have also noticed that the pay for teachers in Thailand has significantly decreased to a standard 30,000 baht or less with very few positions at or above 45,000. In China, wages seem to be increasing to a steady 10,000 RMB and an increasing frequency of those exceeding 10,000 RMB. |

- The demand for content teachers at universities will rise. Teachers with PhDs / Masters who can teach business, engineering, etc. in English will be in demand.
- The days of teaching at a university with a Bachelor's are coming to an end.
- The overall demand for native teachers at public schools will drop as new Korean teachers speak English better than their older counterparts. The country's investment is paying off, however bad the "bang for the buck" has been.
- There will be a huge demand and investment for English in and around Pyeongchang for the Olympics.
- English demand will decline as demand for Chinese rises.
- Overall, I think that the demand for high quality English teaching (content courses, business, etc.) will rise, while the demand for "hagwon" English will slowly decline (based on the rise of Chinese and the increased supply of capable Koreans.)[/list] |

The one problem I see with this is that both societies are trying to study English like crazy. I believe that Chinese & Koreans will (and they already do) communicate to each other in English more and more as the language has established itself as the world language and will continue to do so. Why learn Chinese if that only allows you to communicate with one country? If you were to learn English, then you could communicate not only with Chinese businessmen, but Japanese, German, American... etc. So, English is still a more advantageous language, and will remain so for a long time to come.
I liked your other predictions though. |
