Hi! I am starting with EPIK in August and I'm curious about how likely it is I can take my winter vacation over Christmas.
I'm all for a full year in Korea but my family is far less easy to persuade. The compromise has been that I will try to be home for Christmas, but as I understand it most EPIK teachers take their winter vacation in January. Has anyone been able to take theirs over the holidays? How likely is it I can negotiate this with my school or are vacation days pre-determined?
Any insight would be great! |

Christmas isn't considered a major holiday in Korea. If the 25th were on a Wednesday, that would be the only day you'd get off and school would continue on the 26th. The only scenario I see is if your school schedules winter holidays to begin on the 24th (which could be possible, but don't count on it).
Talk to your CT if you can use the days in December and then they'll take away days in August for camps or something. However be prepared to not be given any days in December off. |

i agee.
however, they will give you permissions to do almost anything if you are good looking. they have a soft spot for handsome and charismatic ft.  |

You could, but would you rather work 2 hours a day for 3 weeks and get paid for it? or go home for Christmas?

My first contract, i convinced my school to let me go back to australia for Christmas. It wasnt a big deal, as winter English camps were only 2 weeks in length, and Winter vacation was around 5.
Thing is, you don't know what will happen until you arrive as every principal and school will be completely different to the other. You may luck out and get a school that doesnt even let you leave 15min early without deducting holiday pay for it (unlikely, but still possible). |

Teacher: Mom, I found this cool idea. I'll work in Korea for a year and make loads of cash to pay off my college loans. What do you think?
Mom: hmmm (thinking, "well finally, out of the house"), ok dear, I am so proud of you.
Teacher: Should I bring anything back?
Mom: You mean for Christmas, oh we don't each kimchi.
Teacher: No, I mean at the end of the year. You expect me to travel back and pay 2,000 dollars just for one day? I'll wait till after Christmas then.
Mom: :::shocked look::: NO NO!!!, enjoy Tokyo, or wherever you said you wanted to go. |

Why so sarcastic? It's a legitimate question about a major religious and family holiday in the western world. Besides, don't Koreans living overseas travel back to Korea for Chuseok and Lunar New Year? |
