Hi guys -
I read through many of the posts but I think I'm in a unique situation. I'm in Korea for a 4 week teaching position at a summer program. I have a F4 visa, and I was told by the Korean embassy that I had to register upon arriving in Korea. Do I still need to register with immigration? Will this be a problem when I get paid? I am working for a reputable university so I don't think they'll rip me off but they do things by the books - will they need proof of registration to pay me? If you can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it very much. BTW, I already have a Korean bank account so I don't need to register for that reason.

You need to register and get your ARC within 90 days of your arrival.

IF you will be departing before your 90 days is done and don't wish to maintain your F4 then you do not need to register. If you want to keep your F4 active till it expires then you need to register at the Korean immigration service.

Thanks ttompatz. Am I allowed to work legally without it if it's under the 90 days? Also, when you register, do they give you some kind of provisional/temporary ID while you wait for the actual card? Thanks a bunch!

Yes, you can work during your 1st 90 days.

No, they do NOT give you any temporary ID and they DO take away your passport when you apply for your ARC.

No, you cannot leave the country before you get your ARC or your lose your F4 (and have to begin the application process all over again).

Thank you - I wish there was some way I can explain this to the ladies in accounting. They want to see something in writing from a legitimate source (whatever that means). Is there a gov't website that explicitly states that I can work legally within the first 90 days before registering?
