If you had a chance to give input into the design and equipment of a new classroom, to be used only for English, what things would you suggest?

For example desks, chairs, or tables?

*Put on your thinking caps guys!*

I am actually in this situation- sort of. I've got my own classroom to work with- and lots of resources on hand.

If the class is large, desks are best. You can always arrange them into tables by moving two or three desks together. My classes are upwards of forty kids, so this works well. In smaller classes, or with adults, tables would probably be better. As long as there's room to walk around and talk to individuals, both are good.

I love the fact that I've got a computer and biggish tv hooked up to the net, for various interactive activities.

I'd love to have a reading corner, or a section of the classroom with easy English story books, something for the kids to do, as they seem to like hanging out in my classroom.

Desks and chairs on wheels sound like good ideas on paper, but, it'd be a nightmare for teaching kids. The classroom gets ransacked enough with regular ones.

Fixed desks, so the kids can't move them. No wheels on chairs, that makes them racing cars. Comfortable chairs though. CCTV and a playback facility. I agree with an OHP and big screen TV hooked up to a notebook. An electronic whiteboard, ability to print out your lesson. A reading and time out corner, very important. A teacher's area, clearly defined, so that students are aware of it. Storage space for their bags and other junk they bring with them. Soundproofing, so that you can make noise without worrying other teachers. A capuccino machine for me. Smile
