My KEB debit card remains valid until 2013. Is it possible to keep my account open even after I have left Korea and no longer have a visa or any sort of residency? I would like to have an account with some won in it just in case, and as an option if I come back or something.

thanks

I kept my Nyonghyup account open when I left Korea about a year ago. I emptied it except for a few 1,000 won. I'm going back in a couple weeks and it will be nice not to have to set a new account up.
I haven't tried accessing it from Canada. I'm not sure if my card works internationally, but if you are just leaving a little in it in case you come back to Korea, I can't see it being a problem. Even if your debit card expires, your account should still be valid so you could just get a new card.

Yes, you can keep it open and active.

It is perfectly legal to keep the account open indefinitely. You may want to make sure you have the security card when you leave if you wish to make transactions online from outside the country.

You can also own mutual funds within a KEB account and keep them indefinitely without maintaining residency.

I am definitely not suggesting that Americans who are worried about the financial condition of the U.S government keep an offshore retirement account here in case social security goes belly up. Because I would never suggest anything like that. Never.
