So I did some Googling and searching, and I see reports of being rejected or having to have X amount of time on your visa.
Now that the iPhone has been out for a while, has any of this changed?
What's the process and cost? I tried to find info on the KT website, but alas, nada.
Thanks for your help. I'm headed to teach in Sanbon on 15 August, hope to make some new friends, perhaps maybe YOU!? |

Best bet if you don't want to be limited by the time you have left on your visa is to bring your own iPhone into the store and sign up for a service. Go to one of the KT global stores here, or try SK or even LG. Otherwise get a contract signed up under a Korean friend's name. A used iPhone 4 (16 GB) goes for around 550,000 won on Seoul Craigslist.
Also, more info can be found on KT's site here. |

As soon as you have your ARC card (two weeks if you get the heath check asap when you get here) you can get an iphone. Any KT store can help you, but if you need to go alone, the global stores will be your best bet as they have someone on staff who can speak English (call them before hand, some of the stores share the 1 staff member who speaks good english)
Cost? Free up front with about 30,000 won activation and sim charge added on your first bill.
Monthly costs range from 65-80,000 per month depending on the plan. This includes the price of the subsidized phone as well. |

I know nothing about Korea, but apple is releasing the iphone5 in the fall - probably Septemberish. So if you get the iphone4 you'll pay top dollar for something that's going to be outdated a month after you buy it. |

On a related note....I just got my ARC card and was planning on getting an iPhone, but was told they only offer a 2 year minimum contract (I plan on being here 1 year). But looking at the olleh website link above, it says they offer installment plans of 12, 18 or 24 months. So, does it mean you can get a contract iPhone for 1 year? |

If you have your own Iphone, you can get a 12 or 18 month plan.
If you are getting a new Iphone, they only offer subsidized phones with 2 year contract. |

They must've changed their policy. Usually what KT does is when a new phone comes out, they ONLY have 2 year contracts. I guess since the Iphone4 has been out for a while, they are letting people get 12-18month deals.
I would be very surprised if KT allows 12-18month deals with the Iphone 5. |

Okay, so to be clear, should I try to buy an iPhone in the states before I go and then get it activated there? Or should I try and buy a Korean one there? I will be living on Jeju Island so I don't know how easily I'll be able to buy a secondhand iPhone. |

get one here, less money upfront than buying one in the states outright though i'm not sure if there will be a kt global store in Jeju but worst case scenario is you come up to Seoul for a weekend and get one at the Itaewon KT global store. 32gb costs around 30k/month for the phone + contract
you can always buy a second hand iphone on gmarket or craigslist and have it shipped to you, wont be expensive |

I might be able to take a holiday. If I get it direct from KT Global would I be able to do a year contract? |

There are no 1 year contracts in Korea for KT.
I can promise you that. |

What's the penalty for breaking contract? |

Full monthly payment (no discounts) X however many months left on the contract.
Ex. 12 months x 33k = 396k |
