A Japanese coast guard patrol boad fired tear gas shells at a Korean fishing boat operating near Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), injuring one of the crew.
At 7:15 Monday, Jeong Gi-cheol (45, Docheon-dong, Tongyeong), the captain of the 78-ton Korean fishing boat "Pungun," which was operating near Japan's EEZ 17.5 miles south of Hong Island, Hansan-myeon, Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, was struck in the forehead by a tear gas shell fired from a patrol boat with the Japanese Coast Guard.

According to what crew members told maritime police in Tongyeong, the boat was operating in the waters bordering Japan's EEZ when it was approached by a Japanese patrol boat and was ordered to stop. When they didn't respond to the order, said the crew, the Japanese fired several tear gas shells near the Korean boat.

As this was going on, the captain was hit in the head by a tear gas shell fragment while he was near the pilot house.

The Pungun and its nine crew members are currently anchored off Hong Island, while the injured captain was moved to a Korean maritime police patrol boat and is currently being evacuated to Daewoo Hospital in Geoje Island.

The maritime police said they plan to discover whether the Pungun violated Japan's EEZ as soon as it get backs to port in Tongyeong.
