Ok, so everyone has their thing they nerd out over. For me, it's airlines and travelling. I asked my recruiter who I'll be flying and they said that my school has a travel agent.

To keep in line with my nerdiness (and the fact that I live in ATL), I'm DYING to fly Korean Air nonstop on the 747. Yes, flame away, I own my nerdiness. I'm so nerdy I even requested it (AND I'm holding at 15k Delta SkyMiles.. it'd be nice to pad my bank)!

I mean can you imagine this nerd's wet dream!? First flight to Asia for one, two - nonstop, three - Korean Air's much lauded service and four - a big ass 747.

So who did you fly? I'd presume that A) it's their flagship carrier and I'm hoping they take some pride in it and only use KE AND B) it's not really much cheaper to use anyone else... sooooooo fingers crossed.

Thanks for indulging my nerdiness.

Didn't KAL just get their new A380? That would be the bird to fly on.

I personally like the b777er's that KAL uses for most of their long haul flights. I've flown on their 747s and they were no different than anyone else's 747-400s (Cathay, Asiana, Singapore, Thai).

After you start flying around the planet a bit you will soon discover that almost EVERY Asian airline will kick butt compared to a US carrier every day of the week and 3 times on Sundays.

Yea, I'd gladly take a layover at LAX to cruise over in that beast!

Who did you fly over when you started?

I'm pretty sure I was on United. *cringe* Had to stop over in O'Hare and then Narita! So lame.

I have done the transpac route on KAL, Asiana, Singapore, PAL, Oasis (now defunct), and Cathay. I had the misfortune of flying once on Air Canada and I will never make that mistake again. The same with United.

My first flight to Korea was on a KAL 747-400 (it was before the 777 was in service). I have also flown on their 747-combi aircraft on the red-eye from ICN to HKG. They were nothing special but they are great compared to DELTA/Northwest (before their merger) or United.

www.flyertalk.com

You're not alone in your flying nerdiness.

Know that Delta/Skyteam's miles seem to be worth some of the fewest.

Flyer Talk is TOO nerdy. And most of them are douchey know it alls from the few postings I made in attempt to join the circle haha.

Re: SkyPesos, I'm not too worried. They're just gonna be banked for one big trip down the road, so I'll be fine.

yay, nerdy airline talk! one of my favorite things.

i flew United here originally, 777 O'hare through Narita. i actually like United, i lived in Chicago for years so i flew them a lot back in the day. when i left my first time, i flew Singapore Air 777 to SFO, so that was pretty baller. when i came back, i flew Asiana 777 from SFO. i had an exit row so it was awesome. i took a trip to the US on my own dime last year and flew Delta, only because they were the cheapest. outbound i flew through Tokyo and then on a 747 (my first) through Minneapolis. coming back here, i flew through Detroit and had a direct flight from there.

Asiana and Singapore were both awesome. i didn't care much for Delta and their $7 bloody marys though. the 747 was actually the worst plane, it was the only one i flew that didn't have a personal video system. Delta's in flight entertainment is a little weak even with the personal video. lots of commercials, and you can only fast forward or rewind in 8 minute blocks.

no matter what airline you do end up flying over on, id sign up for a united club card or asiana card to bank the points regardless--- who knows who you'll end up flying on come vacation time down the road (thai air being really cheap and a star alliance member). i banked over 25,000miles my first year over here and got silver status. not bad.

Norfolk, Virginia.

I've recently had the pleasure of flights that go straight between Seoul and DC or Atlanta. I hate flying (can't sleep) but I hate layovers even more.

I agree that most Asian airlines offer better service than most other airlines, but not not Korean Air. It's hardly anything special at all. They're nice and thinner and better looking than the average flight attendant from America, that's for sure, but they're meals suck nonetheless, and they don't exactly follow the safety rules. I know they aren't subject to the US's FAA standards, but I couldn't help but notice that they got up and walked around with a couple of kids in tow down the aisles while we were still taxiing to the jetway on landing in Cali, when I was headed back to the states. I don't think too many people noticed, and everything went well, but I was kinda horrified. There's no good reason to be out of your seat and walking around an airplane during the taxi immediately before a takeoff or following a landing. It's just STUPID and illegal for airlines in the states to do that, but I'm not surprised and seeing that was really the perfect ending to my whole Korean ordeal.

+1

That is my flight every time I go home for vacation =/ Either United or Delta and both of them suck a fat one. Going through ATL is actually faster for us Midwesterners, but Korean Air is always 500$ more expensive.

I always took Singapore Air when going from ICN to SFO even if it cost a bit more than United (and only once was that the case thankfully). Definitely was worth it...
