I have a friend who was hired by a Summer Camp for the vacation. And, true to hagwon style, they didn't bother getting a work permit for him.

There is a family emergency at home and he needs to go back as soon as possible. In addition, he doesn't care about missed pay or airplane costs.

The question: Is the hagwon able to blacklist his Passport for future visa applications if they didn't register him?

Some of you guys out there know so much about this sort of thing and your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Despite what hakwons claim...none of them have any special pull with Immigration. And Immigration doesn't care if you quit work. That's not their jurisdiction. (You will have to get the visa thing taken care of there however).

And since he is not registered the hakwon can do nothing about it without getting themselves in trouble.

Despite what threats the hakwon is giving him he can walk out at any time and be fine.

Thanks! What did you mean by the above Urban?

The camp still owes him money, around 500k won, but I figure they can keep it to cover bills for gas, electriciy, etc.

I meant if one DOES have a work visa they will have to go to Immigration to get that taken care of (transferred/canceled) if they quit. But since that's not the case with your friend he doesn't have to worry about it.

(In)famous hagweon boss line: I know someone at Immigration!

Suggested response from foreign teacher: Great! Do they happen to know you?

Seriously, a hagweon boss cannot do anything to your passport. Only Immigration and the Prosecutor's Office have that power. For either of those entities to do anything, there must be actual proof of your criminal behavior. Of course, working on a tourist visa is illegal; however, the boss won't get the teacher's services if he turns him in.

Probably the best option is to say nothing to the boss and just leave.
