I have been given several gifts by local businesses when I go out shopping. This is not an everyday thing by any means but I feel obligated to accept these gifts so I dont hurt their feelings or cause them loss of face.
Gifts I have accepted: apples, oranges, bread, cake, cookies, pens, 3 kg of beef tenderloin/filet mignon.
Now I usually try to bring a gift in return at a later date but it has turned into an I will outdo you contest.
I recieved some apples(20) so I made up some apple crisp and brought a batch over to the kind Koreans...they give me a case of oranges in return.
I recieved some bread, gave them some of the same apple crisp...they gave me a cake.....I made them some raisen cookies they give me a bunch of their cookies and a box of pens.
My local butcher gave me about 3 kg of filet mignon in honor of my mother coming to Korea, we made a batch of Cajun chicken, potato salad, spinach salad, buns and melon and gave him and his staff a picnic lunch.
I am almost afraid to return there as this gift giving seems to be something like a snowball rolling downhill gathering speed and size.
It is kind of nice though
Anyone else go this kind of dilemma |
