I was planning to have my school fly me over a week or two before my contract begins in order to have time to make a trip to Beijing. Is this possible without having my ARC card yet (I'll have arrived on a multi-entry E-2 visa, not a tourist visa)?
I sort-of remember something about not being able to leave the country until I received my ARC card, but it's a bit fuzzy.
Can anyone clarify this situation for me? |

If you have your E2 in your passport and you enter Korea (rather than just transit the airport) you will activate your E2.
ARE you SURE you will have a multi-entry visa (things changed in Dec. 2010)?
If you don't have a multi-entry visa and you leave before you get your ARC you will void/cancel your E2.
IF you do in fact have/get have a multi-entry visa you are fine.

Why not just fly to Beijing, have your vacation, then arrive in Korea when you are supposed to? That seems fair, but then I wouldn't be too surprised if your school were a bit funny about the flight reimbursement. Maybe if you could make them agree to paying your fare to Beijing it might work |

@ttompatz I will be requesting a multiple entry E-2 visa and will pay extra if need be to get it when my visa issuance number is issued. Fingers crossed! Thank you for the insight. Greatly appreciated!
@Squire My contract is very clear about flying me from my home to Seoul. Knowing Korea and Hogwan owners a bit, I wouldn't want to ruffle any feathers right away by asking to fly me to Beijing instead. |

Can anyone clarify the difference between the multi-entry and single entry E-2 visas? What extra does the multi version allow me after I get my ARC? Thanks! |

After you get your ARC there is NO difference between a single entry and a multi-entry.
All registered foreigners are entitled to re-entry privileges which is why I asked if you were sure you would get a multi-entry E2 (I think they stopped doing it in Dec. 2010 with the change in re-entry privileges).

Yeah, you're correct. I just veried that with my recruiter. |
