Down here in Busan, I've found that the standard going rate for conversational english privates is around 50,000. I've been teaching privates for a few weeks now, but my volume of students (all adults or college students) has increased and I can't handle them all on a 1-to-1 basis.
Is there anything illegal with teaching 3-4 of them together at the same time? I dropped the rate to just 25/person if there are 4 of them together, but I was wondering if teaching that many people at once turns my private tutoring side gig into a "hagwon" for tax purposes? Btw, I have an F4 visa and a tutoring license. |

no, it doesn't make your place a "hagwon" for tax purposes - size of bldg, and all kinds of other factors, are considered then. i think 9 is the max in one class at anytime - wouldn't hurt to verify that again at your regional ministry of ed'n. u say u have an F-4 visa, and a 개인과외교습자 신고필증(tutor's license), but do you have a business registration number(사업자등록증) from the tax office as well? if not, it's technically all illegal. if yes, you're good - as long as you report what you make, that is. |

They didn't give me one nor mention anything of the sort. What is that and why would I need it?
Interestingly, they leave it up to the tutor to decide how much income he/she wants to declare!?! Maybe they do this because tutoring income can fluctuate a lot and is rarely the same from month to month? You could declare that you made only W50,000 one month and they'd have no way to verify it. |

the business registration number is from the tax office...not the ministry of ed'n - i think the ed'n people should've told u about it, but u know... it's to have u legally registered with the tax office. as a registered business, ur supposed to file ur taxes separately for ur study room. yes, that means u have to do it twice yearly...for ur regular workplace and ur study room.
if u look at ur tutor's license, they don't leave it up to the teacher to decide the rates. there r rules for u, me, hakwons, whomever. mine, and i'm sure urs, has four different rate areas; one for elementary kids, one for MS, one for HS, and i think the other is for "other". I filled them out according to what the ed'n office suggested. apparently, there is no real "std" except for the "5mans" u mentioned in ur 1st post...that is the std the market has kind of set here. if u really want to do things legally, u can get everything recorded. that is, give receipts to everyone and keep track of everything. don't know many who go that route though. cash is ur friend, and ltd deposits r as well. u COULD b investigated by either/both the ministry of ed'n and the tax people, but that's not likely. basically, everyone lies about their income here. the tax people know that, as do the ed'n people. |

When I mentioned that I would primarily be teaching adults, they told me that their main concern was how much private tutors charge school students. I got the sense that they are mainly worried that tutors are overcharging their younger school-age clients.
But my main worry is whether I have to register my tutoring as an independent business? Why do I have to do this exactly? I don't have a study room. I don't have any "business space" or an office that I can declare for tax purposes. We have been/will be meeting mostly in coffeeshops. |

maybe the license u have from the ministry of ed'n is different than mine? i got mine from the nam-gu office, and my wife took care of most of the details - we followed what we were told to do including getting the business registration number. my study room is a room in my apartment. i know others who have a separate apartment that they use as a study room. i guess u can go again and verify the numbers/details urself, unless someone else can give us a little more info here. i thought that the private tutor's license was given to u for u to be able to teach legally at ur home, and ur also supposed to register it for u to b completely legal(with the tax people) regarding earnings. i also think that, technically, ur only supposed to b teaching at the location stated on ur license, but i could b wrong about that, too. i also got mine back in '08 - maybe things have changed a bit since then? |

It's good that you have a wife who can read/understand Korean. I just asked a co-worker today who can read/speak way better than I can and she said she was willing to go back to the MOE with me this week so I should have all my questions hammered out.
I appreciate all your help, denver. It's so hard getting good quality answers to questions on this board. |
