I've bought numerous items on Gmarket, most recently a KitchenAid mixer for about $400 US. I received a call today I need to pay a $80 customs fee to bring it in. Why would a Korean site charge import fees on items without announcing it?

Anyone had to pay custom fees on items bought from a Korean site?

Did you check where the item is originating from? the item listing tells you whether its a domestic item, or if it has to be imported from abroad.

I would tell Gmarket to refund you the item and you should find a seller who is selling that item within Korea.

That happened to me once. I had to pay $30 customs for the special edition of Beatles Rock Band (with instruments).

Basically, from what I gather, the rule is that up to $150, it's free. After that, it's 10% of the cost of the item.

If you want to TRY just getting a refund from Gmarket, you can, I guess. But I'm not sure it would work, especially if it said in the description it was imported.
