You need to stay away from the CRIMINAL "Justice" system. Other than that, Korea is a really nice, developed country.
It really is a starter ex-pat country, at least as far as the urban areas go. ZIFA is right that patience is needed, but it would be the same for any Westerner in another non-Western foreign country.
9% language ability. Who could say that about any other Asian country? Outside of Singapore and Hong Kong, in all other Asian countries it really helps to know the local language, and in some cases is necessary. |

lol.
i love the fact that the OP took it upon him/herself to point out exactly what is needed to survive in korea.
and did it all with a grammatically dubious title for the thread.
where do you people come from? i mean, seriously? |

I don't know what traits you NEED necessarily, but 95% of expats in Korea exhibit the following traits:
1) Whine and bitch about everything.
2) Blame everyone and everything else for their own shortcomings.
3) Failure to gain working knowledge of local language.
4) Inflated sense of intelligence, experience and wisdom.
5) Chronic lack of critical thinking skills (Asking WHY? all the time without bothering to do the proper analysis)
6) Claim that everything is better back home.
7) Massive amounts of insecurity masked by incessant indirect/direct bragging of mundane or unremarkable attributes/accomplishments. |

The Indians, Malaysians, and the Filipinos speak more English than the Koreans.
Learning Korean beyond a survival level is a waste of time.
As for Korea being nice and developed, where outside of Seoul? Even with all of the technology it's still a second rate, wannabe modern country. |

So you think learning a second language is important.

I'm confused. |

are you high?
"gem" obviously pointed out that learning a useful language like english is indeed useful. korean is not.
my korean is pretty good, but once i leave this country i'll never use it again. unless i want a great deal on dry-cleaning.
honestly, i really thought that was obvious. |
