I don't know anyone who worked at that specific branch, but I know quite a few people that worked for other branches of KJC in Busan, including my girlfriend. Their experiences were good, no problems with pay, block shifts (5 hours of class, come in an hour early for prep), you can take your vacation any time you want after you've been there for 6 months except during intensives, no more than one or two classes to prep, pension and health care, decent housing, some additional long weekends in addition to national holidays, and opportunities for strictly voluntary overtime (editing and recording listening scripts as well as teaching). The people I knew at KJC were pretty happy with it and didn't have any major complaints. Plenty of people re-signed for a second year.
The worst things anyone I knew from KJC had to say about it were:
1) Intensives. They have 5-week long intensives during summer and winter that involved 10 hour days with 4 hours of desk warming each day.
2) Corporal punishment. At my girlfriend's branch, at least, administration would whack kids with a ruler to discipline them. This is not uncommon in Korea, and whether this is a pro or con is debatable, I suppose, but you probably should know about this before you sign on for a year with them.
Normally, commenting on other branches of a hogwon isn't particularly helpful because at most chains each branch is owned by a different person who has a lot of independence. However, all KJCs (12, I think) are owned by the same person, so the policies are pretty standard chain-wide.
In short, you could do a lot worse than KJC. |
