Language: usually not a problem
Online gaming: works for the most part
Region settings: sometimes tricky, but you can find ways to make it work
For both consoles you can set the system language to English. Game languages depend on what languages are included on the disc. Most games sold in Korea include English (but not all).
The PS3 doesn't have any region restrictions for its games. You can buy a game anywhere in the world and it will work on your Korean PS3. The Xbox 360 region restrictions are a little more complicated. Region restrictions are set by the game publishers, so some games are region free and some are not. Obviously all Xbox games sold in Korea will work.
For online stuff... If you're a foreigner you can't create an account on the Korean PS3 network (requires citizen ID number). I called and emailed the Korean Sony office several times about this. They were actually willing to give me a refund for the PS3 rather than give me an account. They said it simply wasn't possible. You can, however, create an account in another country (US, UK, whatever) and use that, but if you plan to pay with a credit card it has to be from the same country (Korean card won't work).
For Xbox live you can create a Korean account without a problem. If you choose to do this the marketplace will be in Korean language, but the rest of your console and games will remain in English. You can also make a US account, but once again you can only pay with a US credit card.
I've found online play on the Xbox to be a bit disappointing. Most games have serious lag (not many players in Korea I assume). |
