|
|
Gf has a Samsung Galaxy SII. It has all the hardware needed for a video chat but Google Talk seems to have it disabled, Skype too.
She's in Korea, I'm in Canada. I have a desktop, laptop, iPod Touch.
Is there any program we can download that will allow us to have webcam conversations?
Not so enthused about trying to guide her through rooting her phone as I wouldn't be around to help her. |

I heard a free program called Fring will allow you to do it (at least it did 3 months ago). Look for it in the Google store. I was about to try it, but got so disgusted by the sign-up process, I never actually got it working. Probably my fault, as I was trying to do 2 or 3 things at the same time. |

maybe try the fring again. sometimes video chats r a pain in the wazoo. u have freezing, have to restart, have the other person call u, then u have to b the one to call them, and more. keep trying. play with the settings. use kakaotalk(free texts, 20-second voice msgs, 6-second vids) and/or viber(free texts and calls) until u get the preferred voice/video chat stuff working well.
also, is ur ipod touch 4th generation? if so, maybe this one would work(i've not used on any phone, so cant say whether it's good or not)...

Apparently there was a Skype update that was supposed to directly address Samsung Galaxy SII.
Anybody in Korea get video calls working since the update? My girlfriend couldn't get hers working, and she said she searched online and other Koreans haven't been able to get video calls to work.
Lame disabling of a great phone. |

I've run into the same issue with my Samsung Droid Charge here in the U.S. The information I've found is that Skype video chat will only work with the newer versions of Android (gingerbread or later, IIRC) so you'll have to way for the Android update to your phone. |

a bit of an update.
was able to connect using my iphone4 to someone using a newer(little over a month old) samsung galaxy s2(admittedly, i dont know the firmware running on her phone) using the qik program.
i first tried two hacked versions, neither of which seemed to work. the official one from the appstore through itunes worked.
i could see/hear her and she could see/hear me...although i saw her upside-down! sure that's a kink that can b worked out.
not perfect reception, but pretty good. both of us r in the same city in korea though.
also, fring userguide...

She can see me on fring so the problems are all on her end. Wish I was in Korea so I could tinker with her phone but I'm not. |

I got video calling on my Galaxy Tab to work on 2 programs.
Oovoo and Skype, with oovoo I have to hold the phone sideways or I'm upside down.
In skype you have to go into your settings and click "enable video calling" For my tab it took around 20 minutes to enable, but when I did it on a customer's Evo 4G+ it took around 20 seconds. YMMV.
Both programs allow PC to mobile or mobile to mobile calls.
Personally, I found oovoo to be a better overall experience. |
