Hi there

This might just be the sceptic in me but I've seen a few adverts recently that state the working hours are only 2-8pm. Should they be believed?

I heard many a story during my time in Korea of people getting shafted by Hagwon bosses. Adding on extra classes to the day without extra pay was a pretty common one.

If I opted for one of these jobs am I setting myself up for the same fate? I really don't want to get burned by a hagwon upon my return. I need the extra time to study so these hours would be perfect.

Working from 2-8 is not uncommon at all, it is probably legitimate. I work at an average franchise hagwon and I work from 2-8:30.

The only thing to bear in mind is that there may be some days were you pretty much teach from 2-8 straight (with no more than 5 minutes in between classes). Make sure you eat before work on these days.

Good luck!

Thats reassuring to hear. After being in a public school for two years, twiddling my thumbs for a lot of the time, working that shift would be a big improvement.

I like the sound of only being at school to plan and teach, especially if it's only for six hours each day.

Does anyone else work a similar shift at a hagwon?

Actually Gary, i think 'reassuring' is a bit on the wild side.

Poster iswhatisit speaks of 2 till 8.30. That could mean coming in say 1.40 just so one doesn't get swept off one's feet. Then 30 min classes ad infinitum without a break, making you wish you'd never been born.

Or a heady bunch of 40 min ones to get you nicely exhausted and burnt out after only 3 months.

Compared with say 1 to 8. That is, one hour loaf-about chatting to the most agreeable K teacher and then 6 hours with 10 min breaks.

What I'm saying is, get it from all angles, the devil's in the detail.

No.. my hakwon hours are from 1:30-7:30.. That means I come in at 1:30, browse the internet until 2, plan from 2-2:30, and teach from 2:30-6 (nonstop with 5 minute breaks), then 6-6:30 I plan for tomorrow, then I pick up browsing the internet until 7:30. Hakwons are so much better

Its probably fine. Just bear in mind that these type of places usually have "summer classes"/"winter classes" which change the hours to 9am-6pm. Often 2 weeks in summer and 2 in winter.

From the experiences of most of the folks I know, 2-8 actual teaching hours is believable, though you may be expected to show up 30 minutes to an hour early to prep, and there may be phone teaching after your regular hours that will not be counted towards teaching hours. Just check the contract carefully.

You mean, is it too good to be true? The offer based on hours alone seems good as long as you don't mind giving up your evenings. Personally, I wouldn't mind 4 days like that, and then a Friday morning to afternoon shift so I could start my weekend earlier.

Tell them when you start you have a 12:30pm Korean class or something. That way you "can't" make it to school before 2pm.

When you sign the new contract make sure it has a clause that the owner can't change the stated work schedule in the contract without written consent from the employee.
