I have an MS Ed in Online Curriculum Design. I'm considering starting an EdS program in Education Technology at Mizzo Columbia. I DON'T want to do a PhD dissertation. Just wondering if an EdS given anyone's career a boost to have one? Did you ever have to explain what it is?

Why not just go for the Ph.D.? I am not too familiar with the Educational Specialist degree and what that entails, but the Ph.D. is universally recognized...

I don't want to have to do a dissertation. The EdS is 10 classes and a capstone project.

Is EdS the same as ABD?

I didn't have to explain my specialization in Education Technology (came from an IT background) but outside of academia most people that I have met don't know what an ABD (PhD.(ABD)) is.

To answer the original question, it HAS helped advance my career (as much by demonstration of the practicality of its use as compared to knowledge of theory or the credential itself).

I was looking at Liverpool and Walden and heard about a doctorate degree that is not a PhD. It sounded like a lot of work and expensive and in the end you don't have a PhD. I don;'t think schools in Korean recognize it.

I am also working on my MEd degree at the moment in the US. I mentioned to my advisor that after I get a few years of specific work experience under my belt that I want to pursue an EdS in social studies curriculum. What she said was that if I ever wanted to teach at a university (even as an adjunct) that I would need the PhD. If I really never wanted to teach at the university level and I was getting the EdS just to advance my career within the secondary school field then the EdS degree was adequate. So I would suggest thinking about what your long term plans are. Also, many education departments offer an EdD and not an PhD, which makes the dissertation a little different and in my opinion a little easier.

An EdS is a recognized degree in Korea, but it won't raise your salary because it is still only a glorified master degree without a dissertation. Universities want to know that you have written and defended an acceptable dissertation. EDs and ABD are not helpful in securing a university teaching position when a PhD is required.

I'm not too concerned about teaching at the uni level. I got my MS Ed 5 years ago and haven't worked in the field. I want to upgrade my credentials and knowledge of the field. I took all the reading parts of all 3 books we use in class, made them into PowerPoints, used Adobe Captivate and Presenter to make randomized mini-quizzes and add spoken dialogue to the reading. We're now in the process of transferring everything on the school webpage using Moodle.

I'm completely burnt out on ESL, been doing it since 1995 and want to escape. I like teaching, but don't ever want to face a class full of rude, spoiled brat middle schoolers again! EPIK has totally burnt me out on it.
