Any medical savvy people out there with some info on contracting the illness?

I have a friend who recently went to Coex and saw Harry Potter 3-D. We're wondering if she could have perhaps contracted pink eye from the 3-D glasses. Does anyone know if this is a very likely possibility? She's definitely contracted the disease and is a student who has zero to no contact with children or people for that matter. Basically does research day in and day out. She apparently asked the doctor and didn't understand what he/she meant.

I'm kinda worried about watching 3-D now. And NO, I don't have pink eye. The chances are low, right?

3D movies suck anyways, you can never focus on anything except the one thing that's stuck in your face.

Yes, it's possible, but you'll never know. See the 2D version. For what it's worth, several students of mine have had pink eye lately, probably from the 3D glasses.

That's horrible that your students got pink eye. If it's from those glasses, shouldn't these movie theaters be held responsible? I mean, I tried buying my own pair some place, but can't find any.

Gosh, now you have to wonder if you'll watch a movie and end up with an eye illness. Definitely will have to take some disinfectant with me and super clean (likely off the film on the darn lenses) them like crazy or just buy a 3D TV and watch crap at home. Mad

Good lord....how did some of you make it past puberty? Laughing

You do know most things you touch during your average day are covered in fecal matter right?

Then there are all these other germs out there waiting to pounce on you.

Your best bet: buy a HazMat suit and walk around in it, always carrying a spray bottle of purel just in case. Laughing

Hahaha...not! Apparently all that fecal matter has gotten the better of you.

I don't know if one can catch it from 3D-glasses, but I do know that pink-eye (conjunctivitus) is contagious. In my very first Korean teaching experience September 2007 it seemed like 30 to 40% of the middle school girls had it.

Here are some other ways to come down with it:

Very possible that bacteria passed eye to eye via the glasses.

If you have a Korean friend then they could help you complain to the theater or even start a campaign to have movie theaters sterilize their glasses before each use.

Good idea to bring your own wipes.

Wow! You must have worked in the dirtiest school ever. I've never heard of that many people coming down with it.

Edit: Or they worked out that getting pink eye gets them out of class and that it's easily spread...

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Germs/sanitary-reusable-3d-movie-glasses/story?id=10858332

"Though most cinemas say the glasses are cleaned in between uses, Good Housekeeping tested glasses at seven theaters in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut area and found that not one of them was sterile.

"We're always looking for things that might be of interest to our readers," says Carolyn Forte, director of home appliances and cleaning products at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute. "Given the popularity of 3D movies like 'Avatar,' we thought this was something we should look into."

Requests for comment on this issue were not immediately returned by the National Association of Theater Owners.

The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested seven pairs of movie theater 3D glasses, both wrapped in plastic and unwrapped, and found a number of germs, including those causing conjunctivitis, skin infections, food poisoning, sepsis and pneumonia.

One was even contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus, the most common cause of staph infections."

Actually it was not too bad - probably one of the cleanest schools in my 3 years in Korea. Upon further reflection, my estimate was probably way high. It just seemed like a lot of the girls had it. But after that first few weeks it never happened again during my year there.
