So I've posted on here a couple of times before, complaining about how I couldn't sign up for various Korean websites because they couldn't match my name and ARC number.
Well, I recently attempted to sign up for Interpark. I used the foreigner sign-up option, and yet I still got rejected because my name apparently didn't match my ARC number. This is the last straw. I don't know of any other foreigners who have had trouble signing up for Interpark. I wrote my name exactly as shown on my ARC, too.
I'm beginning to suspect that Korean Immigration (or some other government agency) spelled my name differently in the government database than on my ARC card. I have a fairly long last name that even Americans often spell wrong. Plus, there are a number of ways in which my last name could be written in Hangul (if it was indeed written in Hangul).
Is there any way to find out exactly how my name is written in the database that these websites get their information from? I'd really like to be able to buy tickets online for soccer and hockey games! |

The Korean government has got to stop this asinine policy of requiring people to enter their ID#'s for doing almost anything online. Who cares if some celebrities are hurt by some comments, grow some balls.
No wonder why they have some many 'Chinese' or 'North Korean' hacking incidents. Maybe because every online company stores their user's ID#'s and names... |

How are you entering your name? And exactly how long is your name?
For most websites you must enter your name in ALL CAPITALS, surname first followed by first and middle names, with no spaces in between. It should be the exactly the same name that is on your alien registration card, just without the spaces. Conveniently, very few websites actually give you these instructions, but that's the way it needs to be.
For example if your name is Barack Hussein Obama you should enter OBAMABARACKHUSSEIN
This will work for most websites that accept foreigners. It's still a huge problem, and it's a problem the government has claimed to be "working on" for over 5 years with no serious results. It has gotten a little better than when I first arrived in Korea, but there are still way too many websites that won't accept foreign registrations. However, Interpark is not one of them. You should have no problems there if you enter the name correctly.
Alternatively, registering with the I-pin is also an option. |

ID verification of private sector websites/merchants does not involve directly comparing input information against government registry. It merely checks if the name typed-in and individual KID/ARC number conform to the number-generation algorithm which was used by the government to generate KID/ARC number in the first place.
If you want to see what name and/or personal information is currently held by Korean government, you can request a 외국인등록사실증명 from local Immigration Office or District Office. |

Thank you for this tip! I had tried my name in so many ways but I never thought to remove the spaces!
I successfully signed up for Interpark as well as a bunch of other Korean sites, like Coupang and Groupon! Just bought some coupons to go to Playdoci in Bucheon!
I can't believe that after all of my complaining on here and elsewhere, no one ever told me this "secret" to signing up for Korean websites! |
