Hi

I've recently accepted a job from TOPIA in Pyeongchon. I saw quite a few negative reviews online for other branches, but was told from my recruiter not to focus on the negative ones because they're often personal rather than professional. The negative reviews were never towards the specific TOPIA school that I was hired for, but there might be a grain of truth with what was stated. Since I've already accepted the job this thread might be too late, but I'd still like to know what I'm getting m myself into.

I was wondering if anybody has worked here before and what they thought?

Ahhhhhh.... the things recruiters say to get you to sign on the dotted line. And I suppose the positive reviews are all professional, and are the ones you should be listening to? If you believe that, I've got a bridge in Busan to sell you.

Truth be told, if that particular branch has no reviews, then it probably isn't fair to judge the Pyeongchon branch based on what goes on at other TOPIAs, for better or worse. Most hogwon chains run as a series of independent franchises, where the owner of each buys the name and maybe curriculum, but has a lot of leeway as to how they run his/her school. If you're seeing negative reviews of other TOPIAs, that probably means that the TOPIA corporation can't be bothered too much by whether their franchisees screw over their foreign teachers, but it doesn't necessarily mean your particular TOPIA (or insert other hogwon chain name here, not trying to slag on TOPIA here) will screw you.

In the absence of reviews of that particular branch, the best thing you can do is to ask to speak with at least one of the current teachers at the school you're applying to. Exchange e-mail addresses, because the boss may very well be listening to your conversation, and by email ask if there's anything else they think you need to know before you sign on for a year at that school.
