Hi,
I've got a few questions. I'm planning a trip to Jirisan, and I'm wondering exactly what we need to do. Apparently you need permission to camp overnight? Does anyone know the proper channels for this?
Also, what are the shelters there like? It sounds like you don't need a tent, even. Are we talking about big cabin complexes or tiny hut-type things?

But i dwas given a gift box set of the best Jirisan podojoo by an ex- girlfriend, it was great. Pick some up while you're there. |

i live right next to Jirisan N.P.
I love the park. it's got a lot of really great trails, temples, and waterfalls.
Hwaeomsa is a cool temple. take the bus from Gurye to get there.
I live in Namwon and there are buses that go to the park from here too.
Cheonwangbong is the highest peak on the South Korean penisula. I went to hike it about 4 weeks ago and the trail was closed because of the dry season. i think it's open now though.
(i will probably hike it next weekend, so if you wanna meet up let me know)
i hiked Barabong peak about 2 weeks ago. great views but the flowers are gone.
Nogodan is a great hike, but it's loaded with people.
Go to Manbokdae to avoid the crowds. |

Hi Blake,
I did a big west to east hike a couple of years ago. Anyhow, it is pretty tough so if you are a newbie on the climbing I would get a little training in first or have reasonably good physical fitness.
The cabins are basically a rock up and stay affair. Some are big with over 300 spaces for sleeping and some are tiny with about 20-30. Bring a sleeping bag, but you really don't need a tent as the cabins are good.

BTW just because, thanks for the additional bit of info... Have you ever hiked in Gwanaksan or Bukhansan? Are they challenging or cakewalks?
Also, what are these places like, in terms of people. Is it really crowded?

If you do either of these at the weekend you are asking for trouble if you don't like crowds. Even on a weekday, they can be busier than you'd like. IMHO, you should do these and try to make your own trail up and down through the forest. It is way more fun and, because they really aren't high, quite doable.
Dobongsan was good too if you do it as above. Check out my blog for more details. |

I did Bukhansan and it isn't a cakewalk, but not too hard, if you can do this with relative ease then Jirisan is acheivable. Just do a couple of smaller mountains a couple of weeks before hand and you should be OK.
I don't think they are crowded. I did it during CHUSEOK and I had no problem getting room in a cabin. There are quite a few people but not enough to not make it a great experience.
Also, don't take too much food as they have some items at the shelters. Just tinned stuff, and ramyeon, etc.. |
