If there was a better way to ensure animosity and someone from Japan making the effort to step foot on that island, I'd like to see it. Another great example of adjeossi-level thinking, and (lack of) political elan.

SEOUL
South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak has warned Japanese lawmakers against visiting a site near islands claimed by both nations, saying their safety cannot be guaranteed, an official said Wednesday.
The neighbors are facing a renewed escalation in a decades-old territorial row over the Seoul-controlled Dokdo islands in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), which are known as Takeshima in Japan.
The latest row began when flag carrier Korean Air operated a test flight of its new A380 aircraft over Dokdo in June. Tokyo in response ordered public servants not to use Korean Air for a month.
Four lawmakers from Japans conservative opposition Liberal Democratic Party also announced a plan to visit Ulleung island, the closest South Korean territory to Dokdosparking anger among Seoul officials and activists.
Lee, at a cabinet meeting Tuesday, ordered officials to advise Tokyo that Seoul cannot guarantee the lawmakers safety and to urge them to cancel the visit, a presidential spokesman said.
He did not elaborate on the safety concerns. |

I don't really see what the purpose of japanese lawmakers visiting Ulleung-do is, it is undisputed korean territory. If they simply act as tourists then fine, but if they are going to try to make some speech or gesture then they deserve what they get. |

I don't know how valid this is on both sides of the seas.
Two main political parties in Japan (LDP and DPJ) have lost substantial powers. 2MB (Lee Myung Bak) has lost most of his in-party support and he's at odds with Park Gyeun-hye and the Democratic Party and the pro-Roh party.
How strange. |

Send a Seal team in to get everyone off Dok-do in the middle of the night. Once clear, have a C-10 drop 50 MOABs on the rocks. Obliterate them. Destroy every trace of rock from 20 feet below sea level. There. They can argue over who owns the water if they want, but at least this situation will be done.
It reminds me of when my brother and I would fight over a toy when we were kids. My mom would take the toy away and say "if you can't share, neither of you can have it." |

Actually I agree with the sentiment of NohopeSeriously... I think the so-called "fighting" is just a giant charade to distract the public in both countries from how totally crummy and inept both governments are. Nevertheless, obliterating the rocks (which although I think they actually do belong to Japan historically, serve no real purpose other than to accumulate sea gull guano) would also be totally fine by me at this point... |

Why kick Japan? The LDP politicians who are saying they want to visit the island don't represent the Japanese people, especially now as they've been voted out of power after years of vote-rigging and generally abusing common citizens.
Besides, not only does Japan contain one of the most sophisticated and rich cultures (and Joseon came up with...an alphabet in the 14th c. long after most civilizations, and an iron-clad turtle boat, long after the country had already been overrun and ravaged) on the planet (along with women who really know how to get your motor running, without the complete and utter addiction/slavery to 'specs'), it is also a country whose founding ancestors (post hunter-gatherer with rice cultivation and bronze tools) came over from, uhm, Korea.
I say kick both the LDP dopes and Christian fundamentalist nutcase Lee in the money bag for allowing it to get to this point/putting on a show to divert attention from the real issues...on the other hand it would be interesting to see Lee bravely sicking his dogs of war on some ageing politicians, right up there with his courageous crew firing on the Asiana commercial jet. |

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the obvious solution to this is for both sides to form a 50-50 corporation and open up a casino on the islands. Have it all tax free and open to citizens of either country. Maybe set up some sort of bank so the higher ups can launder money there or something. |

You know those Japanese LDP politicians in Incheon International Airport? Yeah, those middle-aged dudes want to get votes for the next (dysfunctional) election back in Japan.
Both Korea and Japan have their own problems:
-Korea has a conservative businessman for president waiting to embezzle billions of wons.
-Japan's main opposition party is a Neo-Nazi-like nightmare for the Japanese citizens. |

Own goal by Korean immi I reckon, had the J-politicans been allowed in to prance around Ullengdo then they would have looked childish and the Korean authorities would have come across as dignified at humoring them....as it is both sides look childish.
Maybe a compromise would have been to allow them into Korea but the private ferry companies could have refused them passage to Ullengdo thus allivating the gov of the decision and leaving the LDP losers to drown their sorrows in a Hangangjin Izakaya.
Japanese people are concerned about the Fukushima fiasco, national debt, sluggish growth and healthcare for the huge amount of elderly people in that order....Dokdo/Takeshima comes roughly in 145th place of their list of concerns. |

Pretty much. The political situation there is simply abysmal. Most Japanese can't even remember who the current Prime Minister is these days (and care even less)...
Still, even though the LDP guys were obviously trying to stir the pot and provoke a response, it's pretty annoying to see the overblown and self-righteous reaction on the Korean side (including idiot protesters holding up banners telling Japan to "go die") every time the issue is brought up... They should have just let them visit the stinking island and walk around in the bird guano for awhile till they got bored and left. But no, it has to be a jingo-fest each and every time. |

I never noticed this. Koreans don't have any interests on these crazy protests unless if the protests are about ousting Korean right-wing politicians.
And Japan right now has an insane level of political instability that resembles the South Korean political scene in the 1950s.
My conclusion: Japan and South Korea are the two idiots of East Asia like Lloyd and Harry from the movie, Dumb and Dumber. |
