This doesn't look good at all. He maybe one in a thousand, but it would be the worst if you were the one in a thousand.

Yeah, it's depressing. But I'm hardly surprised by any of it anymore. We've known for months the government was covering up how bad things really were from the start, but we did know there was radiation even in the Tokyo water supply.
To me I just know how close Fukushima is to Tokyo, so when I kept hearing how bad it was there (plutonium rods blown hundreds of feet in the air, core melt-throughs, 'pockets of death' within the facility that could give a person lethal doses of radiation in seconds) it was kind of a no-brainer that Tokyo would be affected.
Not everyone agrees though, plenty of people still think it's totally safe (mostly wishful thinking I would guess). The whole thing saddens me, but I try not to even bring it up around my friends from there, as talking about something that can't be fixed is just depressing, and some people get defensive about it (and there's no point in arguing about it)... |

The chernobyl operation involved tens of thousands of troops and resulted in the later cancer deaths of most of them. It was more than simply dropping a dollop of concrete, it was very tricky and involved a lot of tunnelling underground and engirneering.
It was basically a massive human sacrifice and so far the Russian govt has apparently not recognised the grievances nor paid compensation.
Maybe Japan just does not want to go down that road. |

Because the reactor cores are still molten... You'd have to wait for the cores to be cool (which the Russians apparently did by dumping thousands of tons of boric acid and lead in Chernobyl).
It's also hard to even get close enough to the reactors pour concrete with any precision, since you'd have to enter the buildings, and parts of the inside are so radioactive (being described as 'pockets of death') that you'd receive a lethal dose in 2 seconds (and thereafter die a horrible death in short order)... |
