When I am done with teaching in Korea I am going to go on the D-10 for the maximum time allowed (6 months....I think).

Why?

So I can study Mandarin and Korean languages and take correspondance university classes from Athabasca University to upgrade my GPA. I will also do some travelling around Asia during this time.

I have a cheap, clean and comfortable (although small) one room on the outskirts of Seoul which is in my name. My rent is 350 000 a month (beat that in Canada) and I figure that I may as well take a rest from teaching (before I head to China to teach) in a place that I have cheap rent and in which I can acheive some other personal goals.

Question:

Is it possible to be registered in the government health insurance plan while on the D-10? I know I can get private insurance but I don't trust them. I am in perfect health BUT we all know that it's good to be covered, just in case.

Thanks!!!

You need to be registered for national insurance at ALL TIMES while a registered foreigner in Korea. If you weren't, you will have to backpay for those months.

Yes, you can get national insurandce, and they will charge you the "income unknown" rate which is currently about 86,000W per month.

Go to your local NHIC office and register as an individually insured person.
