Im waiting on my PIN number from my recruiter and she told me I would have to contact my nearest KC to get my actual visa.

My question is will I have to drive to DC or can I handle that stuff over the phone.

Will the DC consulate make me send them transcripts?

Just looking for a run down on the process and what I will need have and do.

Thanks

First, just a technical thing - the EMBASSY is in DC. Consulates are the individual offices spread around the country.

Second, what state do you live in? If you live in North Carolina, you have to go to Atlanta, NOT DC. The individual consulates handle certain states. Doesn't matter if you want to go somewhere else, you generally have to go to the consulate for your home state (I take it this is your first visa).

Finally, it's hit or miss as to if you actually have to go. Some people say they've gotten out of it, some consulates allegedly do phone interviews - you just have to wait and see, but the odds are you'll have to go to Atlanta and do the interview.

Thanks for info nathan.

Yea im from NC, that would suck if I have to go all the way to ATL to get the visa.

I gonna see if I can convince them to allow me to do a phone interview bc im def not trying to go to ATL.

Also hoping they dont ask me for any transcripts. I have been to a ton of universities and getting all those transcripts would be a bia.

In DC, you have to go to the consulate (at 2320 Massachusetts Ave NW, on the circle,) not the embassy (at 2450 Massachusetts Ave NW) to get a visa. (There is a third diplomatic building on Massachusetts Ave, having to do with business or commerce, I think)

Apparently, you do have to go to Atlanta these days, but back in 1999 I lived in NC and did get a visa in DC.

I just sent my visa application to the consulate in Atlanta (I'm from NC, too) and they told me you no longer have to come in for an interview. Hopefully I won't get a call next week telling me to come in ...
Also, you can send in either transcripts, or a apostilled copy of your diploma.

I'm from Virginia and got mine done at the NYC consulate, as the DC one was only available for visa interviews on Tuesdays.

I'll be going to Atlanta in person since I don't want my passport to be in the mail twice and get lost. The consulate is in a shopping mall connected to various hotels, so there's plenty of shopping and dining that can be done as you wait a few hours for them to get the visa completed.

It's four for me to Atlanta, but it's going to be four hours each way to Nashville to get another apostilled diploma copy. Had I known it was going to be this much running around, I would've gone to China instead of Korea, but I'm too far along now.

You dont need to get another actual diploma copy.

Print out or have your recruiter email you the one you sent to them.

I think I might actually need another notarized and apostilled copy. The requirements seem to vary widely from consulate to consulate. For example, the Chicago consulate doesn't require any of this. Here's a comparison of the Chicago and Atlanta consulates, cut and pasted from each website:

Chicago

1) Valid passport and 1 copy of its personal data page
2) Completed visa application (with confirmation of visa issuance number from Korean Ministry of Justice)
3) A passport picture (2x2, color) attached to application
4) Visa Fee : $45
* Money order only
- pay to : Korean Consulate General
- Cash accepted in person
5) Self-addressed, pre-paid envelope for return of the passport by mail

Atlanta

 Visa Application
Valid Passport- YOU MUST SEND YOUR ACTUAL PASSPORT. THE VISA ISSUING OFFICER MUST STAMP DIRECTLY IN TO THE PASSPORT
 One Passport photo
Apostille Notarized Copy of diploma (must be notarized)
 Copy of employment contract
Documents regarding establishment of Korean school or organization (All you have to do for this is write the address, phone # and contact name for the school in Korea)
Completed Consul Checklist (please e-mail [email protected] for this form)
Completed Health Statement (please e-mail [email protected] for this form)
$45.00 processing fee- cash or money orders ONLY
Non US Citizen - please reference visa fee section
If Visa Confirmation Number was received AND you are a first time teacher- you must come in for an in-person interview (please e-mail [email protected] for current schedule)
Resume detailing your work/teaching experience including all experience in Korea
***Returning teachers do NOT require an interview
Postage paid self-addressed EXPRESS MAIL envelope for return of your documents & visa- (if you are picking up your visa the business day after your interview then you do not need to send the envelope) NO Credit Card Pay FedEx RETURN ENVELOPES!!!!

I think it'll be a lot cheaper and certainly a lot less time and fuel consuming to just get a PO box across the border in Kentucky and mail my stuff to the Chicago consulate.
