|
|
Hi guys,
would any of you have any "simple" cooking ideas that can be enjoyable and made without the use of an oven, etc. ?
Something sweet would be preferable but it doesnt matter too much. The class is with children under 7 so it gotta be fairly easy, haha
Thanks! |

whatever you do just don't expect them to appreciate it, it will be over in five minutes and they will be back to punching each other and not sharing. Do, however, expect to be cleaning up a big mess.
that said, got a microwave? nuke some milk chocolate with a little margarine and stir it until its runny, then have the kids dip chunks of banana. |

Ham and cheese sandwiches with mustard and chips?
I'd say strawberry shortcake, but make sure you cut the strawberries before class. |

You can make anything you want. The kids don't have to do the cooking, they just have to learn the names of the actions and the utensils. They will enjoy stirring imaginary ingredients, or perhaps measuring and pouring water into cups and bowls, spreading imaginary frosting onto a pretend cake, and at the end of the lesson, they eat whatever you have even if it's just sliced apples and raisins. |

bread's expensive to buy here, so how about getting some cheap rice crackers and making silly sandwiches out of those. You can add any ingredients from sliced fruit and veg to jelly worms and jam or go-choo paste. |

Chocolate fondue works reasonably well, as you can use a variety of fruits and teach them verbs that are relevant to those fruits. That said, you need a hotplate or a microwave. |

Kindergarten Cinnamon Rolls:
Cut the crusts off of bread. Have the kids spread butter on one side. Then let them sprinkle a lot of cinnamon sugar on top of the butter. They will then roll it up "kimbap style" and cut it into slices. Turn the slices so they are little spirals. Drizzle icing (powdered sugar mixed with milk and optional vanilla extract) on top. Finger food and no heat element needed! |

My experience with cooking is thus.
Keep it simple! The more complicated it gets the more things go haywire
Sandwiches, are a good example. Keep it to a few ingredients.
Do not assume. You may think - hey the kids will love a peanut butter and banana sandwich. In the end, no student try or eats any of the sandwich or they complain. I have had this with older kids and tuna melts - half the kids did not want cheese. You will have to adjust the menu to Korean tastes. Some you loved a kid does not mean they will like it.
The school or parents may want each kid to try and participate in making something. This will end up in with nothing getting done or you running around and making all the things.
So some foods that I tired
Fruit Shish kebabs. Add chocolate sauce and that it goes great. Beware of the kid that brings in Tomatoes. Lesson - Fruit
Salad Bags - Get some ziploc bags and have kids make a salad in them. Have them shake them to a little ditty. Lesson - Vegetables
Smoothies / Milk Shakes - Get some fruit, ice cream, and blend.
Homemade Ice cream - couple of plastic bags, containers, milk, ice, salt. Mix some ice cream. Details found via google. Minor problem is cold hands and lots of shaking which might be tiring for some of the small kids.
I keep meaning to try NYC-Gals idea. It looks nice. |

I just did a food themed camp and we made tons of easy stuff
-Ants on a Log (peanut butter/raisins/apples or celery)
-Jello Gelatin (kids love mixing stuff)
-Mud (crushed cookie/pudding/gummi worm)
-spam musubi - we did this for Hawaii day (rice/seaweed wrap/spam slices and you can decorate with a toothpick or pineapple)
-cracker sandwiches (crackers plus whatever)
-fruit salad - this works well with any fruit kids can unpeel and make slices for (orange/grapefruit/grapes/kiwi/banana)
-painted bread (food dye and water or strawberry syrup/slices of bread/paint brushes)
Hope that helps! It was lots of fun making these with my students. |
