Hi there-
I have not yet moved to Korea, but would very much like to do so this coming spring. I'll be looking for teaching jobs, but am wondering if I should disclose my medical condition to any potential employer? Is there any stigma attached to diabetes in Korea? Like, will people freak out if they see me injecting insulin into my hairy belly before I chow down on some bibimbop (or however you spell it)? Speaking of insulin, anyone have any idea how expensive it is, or how easy it will be for me to find a doctor who can prescribe it? I'd like to teach in Busan, but if Seoul has better accommodations, that's fine too.
I realize these topics have already been broached here, but it seems like most of the posts are pretty old, so I guess I'm hoping to get some more recent info. Apologies for any doubling-down on issues already discussed at length.
Thanks! |

I'm not in Busan, but I am a diabetic. I did not disclose my medical condition to my employer....than again it was part of a more serious medical condition so unless you think it will harm your performance at work don't tell them, it isn't there business unless it directly effects your performance. I'm currently still trying to find a doctor to buy insulin from, but my recommendation is to bring as much as you can in your carry on with you so you have time to find a doctor.
Also yes, there will be a stigma for your diabetes because there is a stigma for everything and unless you absolutely have to I would say don't inject yourself in public, if you are not already and have time maybe look into long lasting insulin an example being lantus. |

Munniko, hi. I hope you don't mind discussing this but could you possibly pm me about your health condition? I'd pm you but haven't reached 25. It's just because I'm supposed to be joining EPIK next spring but I'm having some problems after I disclosed my condition.
I have cystic fibrosis and a form of related diabetes but it's not full blown diabetes if that makes sense. I was just wondering if you could share your experiences on the health front and what your condition is? Im pretty pissed off cause I work fulltime and my cf has never caused a problem as it's very mild but they are obviously making a big deal out it it. Starting to wish I'd never said anything but then I don't know how I would've explained the large number of antibiotics in my suitcase!! |
