Hi Everyone,
My boyfriend and I are planning on making our way to Korea to teach in the next upcoming month or so. We have been knee deep in the crazy paperwork process and have run into a strange situation. So our FBI background check just came back from being apostilled and when it came in the mail (2 day priority) it was damaged! paper had gotten a bit smudged (the signature) and a little torn. The post refunded us and apologized but there is nothing that can be changed now.
Does anyone know how strict the Korean consulate is on the state of the paperwork? Do we have to start again from scratch with our FBI fingerprints etc??
Any help on this issue would be amazing we have a couple job offers on the table and dont know what to do!

the consulate doesn't get the CBC. Immigration in Korea does and depending on who is looking at it, whether they had their morning coffee and how hot it is outside may be more determining factors as to whether or not they will accept it.
My advice: USE them AND order an extra set (ASAP).
If there is a complication you will have them on order.
If you don't need them now you MAY need them 5 months from now (when you decide that you need to change jobs).
A spare set never hurts and they aren't that expensive in the great-grand-scheme-of-things. (they are certainly cheaper than losing a job for not having them coming).

thanks for you comment, it makes me feel a little better that there is a CHANCE haha.
Now when you say order another copy, is there a way of doing that without going through the whole process again??

You could call the FBI and explain to them what happened. Perhaps, they could get you another one very quickly. Call them. It doesn't hurt to ask. |

| It's really a judgement call for whichever immigration agent handles your documents, but I would think it should be OK. A similar situation happened to me. Those idiots placed their stamp on the apostille in a position where it actually warped some of the print of the apostille number and made it illegible. I was worried because I was told the apostille number is very important, but I sent them anyway and neither immigration, my recruiter, or two different schools had anything to say. |

In Korea, as long as it looks like it is legitimate and legal, they are not going to be so picky because they are bureaucrats, too, and they know they, like American bureaucrats, are not perfect, and so these government employees in the US are stamping thousands of these buggers, so this is bound to happen, but it sucks when it happens to you. |
