A school in Korea has fired me, but they want me to stay until they find a replacement.
A school in Japan is seriously considering me.
If I am accepted for the job, they want me to start on August 30.
I want to stop my job in Korea and concentrate on packing up for Japan.
However, I just got this letter from the head teacher:

Quote:
This letter is important.
I know you have to go Japan by Augest 30.
But you have to work at TOV until transfer the work to your successor.
And if our school don't agree your transfer, you can't transfer anywhere.
The company that introduced our school to you also said that.
We're searching new english teacher.
Maybe she or he will come our school on Septemver.
So you call your new work in Japan and try to talk well.

I can see why a release letter is necessary for a new job in Korea,
but I can't see why it is necessary for a new job in another country.

Are they just bluffing me?

They can't do anything.....provided you're not dumb enough to provide details of your potential Japanese employers.

Actually, you've given your employer too much info already, mentioning Japan. Why do that? Are you trolling?

When do you get paid? Take your pay, don't say a word, leave and then later email them saying how you regret having to leave so early, but you had to go back home, because of a family emergency.

They're panicking. They should have found your replacement before they fired you, that's not your responsibility. There's no way for them to contract or get involved in your job in Japan. Leave whenever you want.

Your current employer can't do anything to you (other than keep your last pay since you won't be able to hang around to fight for it).

Leave at your convenience and don't look back.
Hand in your ARC at immigration on the way out to cancel your visa.
There are NO repercussions.
No-one will stop you at the airport.
Any threats your employer makes are just noise (and illegal). You are legally free to quit and move on (right that is protected under the labor standards act).

Why would you tell your old school where you are working and when you are going? That's bloody ridiculous.

Count on August's paycheck disappearing.

No, your Korean employer can't block you from getting a job in Japan. I agree with the other posters--don't give your Korean employer anymore information about your new job. And plan on leaving with enough time to begin your new job in Japan on time--August 30th.

I found your head teacher's letter to you to be shocking and offensive. I can't believe she'd try to bully you into staying after they fired you. And I agree with the others about the paycheck--they probably won't pay you, so maybe it's best just to cut your losses and invest your energies into doing a great job teaching in Japan.

Take care.

They can give you a bad reference. This would be the only way they could kill off another job for you either in Korea or in Japan. Probably better not to give the exact new school name to your current employer. And, yeah, anticipate not getting your final paycheck here.

The teacher was fired, so apparently they wouldn't give a qood reference regardless Laughing

If you are fired and you find a new school, go. If you decided to quit and you needed them as a reference, you are not asking for help sincerely. However, you can still go.

As my dad used to say "Bullsh$t baffles brains!".

The audacity you are fired and yet they still want you to work till they find your replacement! What are you a wimp, a masochist, or what? Hey I am guy who will give a school a break ( Hey you need to wait a week to pay me. Ok I will wait!) but that is too much! Why have you not left or given them the bird and moved on. Also why would you tell them what is happening on the future.

Yea I could see the school holding you up if you found a job here in Korea, but you have one in Japan. Their power over you ends at the border. The Korean government can not block you. The Japanese or your home country could via passport or paperwork.

Just Go!

Good Luck in Japan!

+1

If they've fired you and are pulling these shenanigans on you, it's pretty likely you won't see another won from them.

If they're demanding that you work after they've fired you, they'd better be paying you cash up front.

I don't know what your visa situation is, but in my case, I needed a release letter from my hagwon or something of the sorts to leave the country in 2008. After that it wasn't a problem because I'm on a different visa now, but I would double check

Basically, what I'm saying is, they might not let you out of the country in the airport if the hagwon tells them not to...

I'm not 100% sure on that though, so don't start trolling me if the law changed:)
