Hi All,

I've recently arrived in Korea for a couple of years, working in Ulsan.

I'm planning on getting a bike (CBR600rr), and have a few questions for ya:

I have a UK licence (full bike license) with IDP endorsed for large bikes. Is this enough to own and register here?

New price listed on the Honda website is 15 900 000KW. Is that an all in price, i.e. vat, registration, any other taxes?

How much should I expect to pay for 1st class insurance?

My apartment here has ground floor parking (under the units). Is bike theft a real risk here? Obvioulsy I'd lock it up, but.....

How about gear prices, I'll be heading to the UK next month, am I better off picking up a helmet etc there?

Am I right in thinking bikes aren't allowed on toll roads here?

Appreciate your input

Very Happy

Fantastic place to live if you plan on riding. You can ride year-round and the roads in Gyeongsan are fantastic.

No. You have to go to a testing centre and do a skills test. See the motorcycle thread for more details.

I paid around 350,000 last year for my 2009 GT250R. However, you can't get comprehensive coverage for a motorcycle. Only covers damage that you do to other's property. So if your bike gets stolen you're out all that money.

However, nice bikes tend to not get stolen. Scooter theft is rampant but because of the paperwork required to get a big bike on the road they're not a common theft target.

I've found that gear is reasonably priced here. Though you'll want to shop in Busan for your gear since the selection is much greater. Though I assume you'll be able to pack your jacket and boots from riding in the UK. Buy your helmet in Korea though; it's too big to bring with you.

Correct. Not a big deal outside of Seoul, really. The toll roads are incredibly boring to ride. The secondary national roads are much more fun and don't take that much longer from city to city.

If you ride to Seoul there are a lot of roads where motorcycles aren't allowed but there are no toll booths to prevent you from riding there. So also not a big deal.

Thanks for the reply Jon. Your in Ulsan right? Have u dealt with the Busan Honda dealer? english speakers?

Hmmm shame about the test requirements, working a 6 day week here doesn't make it easy to attend that kinda thing. Does anyone know the closest (read: Ulsan!) centre to me?

I thought I had read somewhere that the IDP was enough, providing it was endorsed for bikes. Not sure of the benefit of a car park figure of 8 test!! Oh well, gotta jump through the hoops I guess...

You say search the bike thread but 150 odd pages of questions like mine doesn't make the info easy to find. Is it possible to make a sticky within the bike section detailing requirements for all types/size of bike, links to test centres, the korean licensing agency etc? (Mods?)

I sold off all my bike gear when I escaped the UK 6 years ago, hence why I asked.

Great to hear there is good rides locally, just need to get my license sorted.
