I am currently on holidays and would like to put a local sim in my iPhone 3GS. KT supposedly unlocked it, but obviously it didn't work properly because when I put the foreign sim in, the phone says "sim locked".
I thought it was possible to easily unlock a jailbroken phone, so I jailbroke it with jailbreakme.com. I had version 4.3.3.
From looking at web info, it seems that the unlock apps only work with certain basebands. (btw I have no idea what basebands are or what they do!) I have baseband 05.16.02 which is not compatible.
Apparently, there is a way to upgrade to an iPad baseband that would work. However, I can't do this because I don't have my computer. I also don't want to do this because it is apparently irreversible.
Is there any way I can unlock my iPhone without access to my computer????

Nope sorry. You need to install custom firmware to unlock, which is both super easy and requires a computer.
EDIT: the baseband, btw, is the software layer between your phone and the cell towers. When the phone is "locked" it's just restrictions on the baseband (I.e. Only connect to towers from carrier X), unlocking removes those restrictions. |

Thanks for the answer. I actually have access to a computer, just not my computer. Does this help? |

Well when you install custom firmware it totally resets your phone, so you'll need to restore it from iTunes, which you'll need your computer for, if you want any of your stuff.
Hrmmmm.... You might also need to activate it, which you should be able to do from any computer with iTunes.
Honestly sounds like more trouble than it's worth to me.
But if you want this is the step by step you'd need to follow:
http://jaxov.com/2011/05/how-to-unlock-iphone-3gs-baseband-05-16-01-05-16-02-on-ios-4-3-3/
It takes about 30 miniutes to an hour. |
