I started noticing this while travelling daily on the bus and subway. Whenever I glance at someones watch, mainly a guys, its always set 10-15 fast. First time I thought I was late for work but checked my phone and all was ok.
Strangee  |

I used to do that with my alarm clock; it made me hurry to get out the door a little earlier, making it more likely that I'd arrive early or on time. |

When I was in Basic Training, the Drill Sergeants told us to do that and they called it "Lombardi Time." The idea is that if you plan on being somewhere 15 minutes early, you won't be late if there's a delay on the way. |

I've heard of 5 mins as pretty common. |

My dad used to do that. I never understood it because if you know that your watch is set 15 minutes fast, you mentally compensate. It doesn't really do anything. |

Agreed! It's nuts. My ex-wife did that too, as do a few other people I know. Just get up 15 minutes earlier if you are that worried about being late. |

It's for stupid people.
Anyone who knows they've set their watch ahead 15 minutes knows they can be 15 minutes late. |

I always plan to arrive 10 minutes early to any meeting, hence am almost never late. I don't trick myself by setting my watch ahead, but I do trick my students by adjusting the wall clock to suit my plans (earlier or later by up to five minutes). |

It's how they manage to find leeway time, it's not dumb, it's discipline to work with demanding schedules and early morning clock ins. It a self motivational thing to get going. |

I HATE that 5-10 mins fast BS.
The gym I go to does it on all their clocks. I guess it's so people get out of there a little earlier and aren't late for work. |

Most of the clocks in my school are like this so of course I go to the class 5 minutes late and let the kids go 5 minutes early. They only give me 20 minutes-ish of material anyways! |

You're overlooking the power of habit/conditioning. Every time you look at a clock, how many times do you think, "Oh, that's running fast or slow"? |
