|
|
First time visa applicant with no past teaching experience here with a "resume" question:
I expect to wait until late September before I will have all my documents in hand. In the meantime, I need to write a resume and a couple cover letters for schools and recruiters.
If schools in Korea toss out applicants' resumes if they have seen them before, how many recruiters should I apply for? Or do recruiters take every "applicant, thus" eliminating the need to send my resume to more than one recruiter?
I have found recommended recruiters on ESL Cafe, should I only choose one to send my resume to? Will posting my resume on ESL Cafe help or hurt my job prospects if I have already decided upon a recruiter? Do recruiting agencies turn away business? Should I contact a recruiter now, considering my lack of availability until late September?
*Anybody read the Yahoo article about the girl in the UK who underwent "tongue elongation" surgery to speak Korean?! |

I don't understand what you are saying here
If schools in Korea toss out applicants' resumes if they have seen them before, how many recruiters should I apply for? Or do recruiters take every "applicant, thus" eliminating the need to send my resume to more than one recruiter?
You send your resume and photo to every recruiter.
Send your photo and resume to every recruiter you find. The more recruiters you have working for you the better your job chances are. Yes place your resume on Dave's. Yes, contact a recruiters now, September is not that far away. Recruiters turn down business all day long. You probably won't hear from 1/4 of them and more depending on what you look like and your situation.
Some people say once you have all your documents ready you will look more attractive to schools and recruiters may send more jobs your way.
Hope that helps. |

I've read that schools ignore you if they've seen your photo/resume before. If I stick with one recruiter there is no chance I would be seen twice by one school.
Does the possibility that I could be seen more than once by a school (by way of more than one recruiter) outweigh the prospects of using only one recruiting agency?
I would totally flood recruiters' mailboxes, but I've heard that doing that benefits neither the recruiter nor the applicant because schools ignore the applicant. Any real truth to this? |

I've been on this board for months looking for information and have never heard of that. Most threads I come across advise to get as many recruiters as possible. |

You are confusing many issues.
1 applicant, 1 resume is for each of the 3 (now 2) major public school recruitment drives. It has nothing to do with hagwan applications.
IF you are planning to try for a PS position (EPIK) then wait till you have everything in hand and go direct to EPIK (niied) or pick 1 recruiter who specializes in PS positions.
If you are looking at a hagwan job then use as many recruiters as you can find. They will largely ignore any applicant who does NOT have all their documents in hand since they know it takes MONTHS to get them.

Is it a waste of time to contact recruiters before I have all my documents in hand?

| it is not a waste, but if you are just now starting the process of getting your documents together, it will be 3-5 months before you are ready to go and jobs usually dont hire that far in advance. |

Yes and no. You could give recruiters a one time only contact right now and see who replies. Chances are you will only get recruiters who need a teacher immediately. You might also get recruiting companies which list offers and give the various locations those schools are located (along with salary and age range of students).
If you get a specific message from a recruiter, be honest and let them know when you sent your documents in. Tell them you will contact them again when you have all your documents (then put those emails in the "jobs to check later" folder). Keep the automated emails which list different schools in different locations. Look at them each week or every other week when they arrive to see any changes.
You might also get offers from a third category, a chain school. If you get them repeatedly, you need to be careful in dealing with them. Make sure you talk to current teachers at the school. If they say there are no current teachers, then question them why you keep getting email offers. That would mean no other teacher is taking their "1" job opening. Chances are they do have other teachers but don't want you to talk to them. The only other possibility is that the location is so bad that no one would take it.
You can gather a lot of info now, but action isn't needed until you have your documents. I have been on the phone with recruiters who have several good sounding offers but they won't do anything until I confirm I have documents. |

I wouldn't waste your time talking to recruiters now, or even looking for jobs: at the end of the day you're not even going to be considered for most jobs until you have your documents ready, and most recruiters/employers will probably choose a less desirable guy who has his documents ready over you.
I would wait patiently, research the industry, try to get a discerning eye for the good jobs/bad jobs, that way when you get your documents you will have the knowledge you need to make a decision. Looking for jobs without your documents seems like speculation (I know, I've done it), and most people seems to view you like the kid who tells his Dad he wants to be a doctor. |
