On wed. the school has it's own holiday and they tried to trick me into signing away one of my sick days so i wouldn't have to come to school. i wouldn't sign and said that they could verbally tell me i couldn't be there. after a flurry of activity it turns out i will be working WED. they tried to make it seem like it is the MOE that is the problem, but i know it is just the people at school.

I read it first thinking it was your vacation days, which for me doesn't matter because I don't use up all. However, sick days is a different story.
Did you ask them, "How will you know I will be sick?", "How does MOE know I will be sick?"
Another way to look at it is that your sick day is being treated as a vacation day instead. So, there is no malice in them thinking this way. They see it as giving you an extra day off. When push came to shove, you decided to hold on to it, so they have you working that day instead.
They are just going by the book and not making private arrangements. They aren't being bad or withholding something from you. Could they have been more open about it? Sure, but usually they don't worry about explaining these things. They could have waited and then said in hindsight that you used a sick day. Instead, they brought it to your attention. I wouldn't go crazy over this, just keep an eye on your pay to make sure they are giving you want you are owed.
A head teacher decided to pay me less one month because they cancelled classes one morning. My co-teacher reminded her of an agreement the previous head English teacher made with me and they paid me the difference the following month.
Both our cases are just ways to show how public schools generally will do things by the book and not try to negotiate new things during the year. A hagwon would be very different, and I assure you, they would not have told you until after the fact. |

Dude, they were basically trying to do you a favor and you told them to shove it. Enjoy your 8 hours of deskwarming on Wednesday. |

If the school's having a holiday, such as the school birthday, the OP shouldn't have to use up either a sick day or a vacation day. The school itself is closed that day. |

Generally true, but situations can vary. In a public school just down the road from me, the principal determined his school would be closed an extra day over Chuseok. This was after consulting the Korean teachers who agreed to give up a vacation day in lieu. The same choice was extended to the native teacher, who opted to deskwarm instead. |

if thy wanted to do me favor then they could just tell me that i have the day off like the rest of the staff or they could tell me i don't have the day off.
It says in my contract that it is up to the discretion of the principle. i don't know what deal the native korean teachers have with school red days, but a lot of people in my town were just told not to show up for school that day (this wed.) and that was it, but one girl i know signed away a sick day. |

You can't use your sick days when you're actually sick. They will hunt you down and get you in the classroom.
Maybe they could give you some spelling and typing lessons on Wednesday, teacher. |

And thanks to this post, you shouldn't be surprised when the next official directive comes down that none of us is allowed to take the school birthday off. We'll all have to camp out at our schools for the full eight hours. The reason given, of course, will be "to avoid discontent among the GETs." |
