Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has any sugesstions for places to stay for short period of time? I plan on going to Korea for 3 months, June, July and August. Looking for a cheap (not with a family) but place to stay... is there a Classified forum for boarding?

I heard that sometimes the universities rent out during this time... does anyone know how I can find more info about this aswell?

Thanks!!!!

I can't believe I'm going to do this with how the general/job forums have gone downhill to a slinging match but www.englishspectrum.com does have a good boardings/classifieds listing.

There are some places around universities called hasook jips ϼ
These are boarding houses...you get your own small room, although you usually have to share a bathroom. They vary in quality, but there are some good one's around Yonsei Uni. I stayed in one there for about 2 months and it cost me around 340,000 won.

The best thing is that you don't have to pay any bills, and you get all your meals cooked for you. It's also a good place to meet some Koreans.[/code]

Inn Dae Won is a really cheap hotel. It will set you back about 300,000 won per month, if I remember correctly. It also includes kitchen privs. cable tv, but community shower/bathroom. It's just down the street from Kyobo Book Store in the alley next to Wood and Brick Restaurant.

300,000 seems pretty reasonable... Does anyone know a website for this Inn Dae Won? Is it true that Inn Dae Won is used a lot by English teachers when they first arrive in Seoul?

No, there is no web site for Inn Dae Won. And yes, it is true that many free lancers stay at Inn Dae Won until they get situated. Personally, I stayed there from March 2003 until May 2003 when I finally found a place in Sinchon.

I thought there was only one Kyobo Book Store, but in case there are more, it's the one in downtown Seoul up the street from City Hall.

I'd recommend a hasuk over Inn Daewon. Only problem is you really need a korean speaker to help you make contact with one. There are hundreds of them around Shinchon and for 300-450,000 you will get breakfast and dinner as well (making it more economical than a guesthouse) plus you get to live in probably biggest nightlife area in Seoul.

I would recommend sleeping in my car over Inn Dae Won, but what the heck, I didn't have my car with me at the time. Laughing Anyway, getting back to your question. If you go to the main train station you will find an information center. there are two ladies who speak English. Ask them about Inn Dae Won and they will give you a card that includes phone numbers and directions. good luck

What's the best way to find one of these if I'm coming into Seoul and no one is meeting me at the airport? It looks like my visa might be late in coming and so I might just come over on a tourist visa for a few weeks.

I'd recommend staying anywhere the first night or two.. Inn Daewon or somewhere similarly inexpensive.

Use that as a base and use the day to look around Shinchon (only a few subway stops from Inn Daewon) for a Hasuk.

If you start around Shinchon subway station and walk in almost any direction you will probably stumble across one. Not one the main shopping/nightlife streets, but in the pokier little areas.

Just Poke your head inside and hope the 'adjumma' (woman who runs the place) is around.
She probably won't speak a lot of english, but you shuold be able to get by.

If they have rooms available, check yours out, have a look at the bathroom, ask about meal times etc. I wouldn't recommend having a room right next to the kitchen/laundry/bathroom either (too noisy).

It may sound a bit daunting, and having a korean speaking friend would sure help, but I think it is the best way to go. If you have no luck, just for a guesthouse like Inn daewon or somewhere else.

Wow.. thanks for everyone's help. I'm gonna definitely use it! Just wondering tho.. my impression of Haksuk Jeeb is like Homestay where u stay with a family and they provide room and food. YOu have to be really quiet and can't come home late cuz u'll disturb the family. U know... strict rules like that Sad

Do you mean that these HaSuk places are like hotels? Where a landlord rents out several rooms and provides food!!??! You can come home anytime u want and there are other foreigners living there too?

You have described my hasuk experience pretty well. They won't all have foreigners, but many will (not necessarily native english speakers). I haven't heard about any curfews, but if you are making a racket at 4 in the morning I can't see they'd be to happy.

Have a look at a few and pick the best one.
