or you thought was kinda cool, exists now or long gone

i remember when i went to Korea when i was a teenager, one shocking thing i saw was a guy light up a cigarette in the middle of the movie...a friend pointed out that "technically" you're not suppose to do that but i remember him finishing it inside the theater

i think if anyone tried this stateside, they wouldn't get halfway through their smoke Smile

pretty sure this doesn't exist now but is/are there anything Shocking or Shocked you when you 1st came to Korea?

Shocked in a good way: How pretty the chicks are and how short their skirts are. Plus many of them were/are so easy to talk to....not the amount of arrogance I was used to (and avoided) from back home.

This doesn't shock me anymore, but it seriously pisses me off when I see very young children in a hof or bar late at night.

Just a few weeks ago, I was in a taxi. It was about 4 a.m., and we were passing a GS25. Outside on the plastic chairs, there was one guy who'd passed out, two who were absolutely plastered, and one little girl, who couldn't have been older than 3, perched on the edge of a chair, drinking juice. As the taxi drove by, a woman came out of the shop, probably the kid's mother. She was holding a boy, maybe 4 years old, who'd fallen asleep in her arms. It just infuriates me...

In Daegu, I think a Pascucci's cafe. The smoking section of the cafe was pretty big but it was completely packed. I mean it was completely packed and EVERYONE was smoking. Even as a smoker I wanted to get out of there after one cigarette. There was a couple in the middle of the room and their 5 year old child drinking Fanta Orange. wtf mate

Yeah, it's stupid for the parents to do and isn't really fair to the other folks around who are out having a good time. I shouldn't have to worry about being in teacher mode when I'm in a bar past midnight.

Shocking for Asia in general.

So backwards in terms of Civil Law and treating people (their own minorities, women and children) with equality and fairness.

Korea isn't communist, but it sure doesn't act like a G20 country in this respect.

Shocked.

Shocked:
Silkworms- I shouldn't have been, but some things you just can't help
The Level of English- Way to easy to get by
The humidity- I knew it was going to be humid but....
The toilet can
Sweet Garlic Bread
Two dudes straddling each other while riding a bike. I know people here are touchy-feely but...

Not Shocking-
Basically any 3rd world agrarian practice. I grew up on a farm, I know what to expect. Yeah, people kill animals for food.

Any of the crime/corruption stuff. Anyone who knows how the world really works (including back home) should know that that is how things operate a lot of the time.

Anything relating to smoking or drinking. Thank goodness we're away from the smoking/drinking hysteria of back home. Free health tip- stop feeding you kid Happy Meals. That'll mess them up worse than any night at the bar.

Shocking

- Militarized culture like you see in Latin America in the 1970s
- Crappy education system (still shocked)
- 80% of people over the age of 30 think and act like (American) Republican Party voters
- Italian food here is too sweet
- No carbonated water
- Children pour booze for their parents at home
- Porn website addresses in Korean kids' websites
- Proud culture of absolute anal retentive-ness among Korean bosses and managers (including Ps, VPs)

and so on....
