So I have kind of a unique situation here. I am working at some small hagwon down here in Yongin for the past 5 months now and I'm def. over it. My boss is a tight assed retard who doesn't know how to pay bills so I have been without gas (no hot water, cant cook) for about a month and I only got internet back on yesterday after 2 months. Also she doesn't pay my wage any less than 2 weeks late but is happy to extol me on my ''unprofessionalness'' when a student drops out of my class for whatever reason. Point being, although I didn't plan on running initially, my situation is not worth continuing.
Anyway I have been studying Korean for around a year and my level has become quite good so I have decided to quit work and study full time Korean Language at Sogang until the end of the year before going back home to Australia. Course is payed for and will start on sept 1st.
My concern is how to get my work visa cancelled (it is valid until march next year). I heard that if you hand the ARC into immigration it will be automatically cancelled but I need some confirmation. I plan to come straight back after a few days in Japan on a tourist visa, subsequently changing to study visa.
Are there any major risks I'm facing here? Will I have an issues when going through Immigration, and will the visa be cancelled immediately so that I can return at my leisure on a tourist visa?
Also it might sound paranoid but I have a couple of bank accounts I'll keep open here, will my access to them be void if my visa is cancelled, and can the school possibly obtain access (as they are recorded as my employer when opening the accounts themselves). Knowing Koreans and Korea, kinda have to keep conscious of any possible b.s. that might occur.
Thanks,
Mike |

You are correct, handing in your ARC as you leave will cancel your E2 leaving you free to return as a tourist and change to a "D" visa at your convenience.
There are NO risks other than pissing off your soon to be ex boss and getting a few nasty e-mails or threatening phone calls. Block her number from your phone and filter her e-mails to the trash so you don;t need to bother reading them.
Immigration won't care that you quit.
No worry about your bank accounts or ATM cards either. Just keep a photo copy of your ARC for future reference if they want it at the counter for anything..

What ttompatz said. Also should and when you have another job simply pay the bills yourself. The bills will have a bank name and bank account number on them (some more than one). Since as you say your level of Korean is good it should be a snap. Then you don't have to worry about late payments or shut offs of gas/water/internet. |

Tourists can't change to a D visa if you come in on a visa waiver, though
Don't know if Australia has the waiver, now that I think about it |

On B1 (i think) visa waiver I can't change but with C1 (or 2?) I can. However for one term (within the 90 days of a tourist visa) there's no necessity to obtain the D. I did all the uni admission processing while I still had my work visa and ARC.
Anyways sunday I sailed out to Fukuoka and came back this morning to Busan. It was a breeze and no sign of doubt from either of the immigration officers - I guess they get it alot. I got a facebook message from a workmate already, they figured out I ran - although they have no idea that I'm in Seoul right now. I-d love to have seen the reaction.
Cheers for the advice. |
