Returning for a second year and was wondering, should I purchase a gift for my new director? For Vice Director or even other teachers (native and foreign)? Lastly, what could the gift be? I was thinking a coffee table book from my home City/State or local chocolate. I would do a local wine because I know they enjoy alcohol, but not sure if this is appropriate plus it would be a bit cumbersome to travel with. Thoughts?

How much do you really like them? Are they just 'hello' in the morning office types or do you guys really talk? If you get along well with the co-teacher you can give a gift there but the director? Looks like sucking up, unless you guys are on friendly terms.

I don't know them yet. I'll be arriving in a few weeks and thought it might be smart office politics to bring a gift. I don't want to look like I'm brown-noseing either.

Personally, I think it would only be appropriate after you have worked with your colleagues after a period of time, and if you have built up good working relationships.

Lots of my colleagues - I'm at a middle school - often leave small presents for all the teachers - like a small bottle of juice - 200 ml- they'll leave it on your desk. This is usually becuase they've received a box as a gift from a parent.

I think a very small token gift for all your colleagues might be appropriate, but not a coffee table book or bottle of wine for the director: this is too much. I once bought a bottle of wine and flowers for a colleague in England because she worked as my mentor for my first year as a newly qualified teacher - but I wouldn't have arrived at the school doling out gifts for no reason. In my opinion, it does smack too much of sucking up. You should let your good work speak for itself.

Having said that, I'm sure other people might disagree.

In another thread, someone recommended bringing a cake, instead of gifts, for everyone (directors and teachers) to share on the first day. For about 20,000 won, you can give a good first impression and bring a smile to everyone's faces.

Nothing!! Wouldn't give a thing. Sure, if you get to know them then on returning from vacation a bottle of scotch would go down nicely!!

save your money. i bought my previous teaching director a gift on my last day to leave on good terms. when i applied for a new job and they called her to ask about me she gave me a bad reference.

Chocolates, cookies, or other sweets from your city/state. Just make sure you have enough for everyone (including the "office" staff).

Simple and inexpensive but thoughtful.
