Just as the title states.
My Hagwon is getting us to come in for 5 hours this Saturday and next Saturday (we don't usually work Saturdays) to cover Chuseok. Is Chuseok considered to be red days? I thought it was, but wikipedia (yes...I know Confused ) says that it isn't.

What's the deal?

TIA

Chuseok IS a red day as are the days preceding and following it (it is a 3-day red-holiday (national holidays)).

Most contracts specifically state that you get those (national holidays) days off.

Unless you work for CDI you are getting screwed.
If you do work for CDI you are still getting screwed but your contract says you will do it.

Thank you very much for your fast response. How about Children's Day, Memorial day and Seollal? (just to keep you on your toes!).
I am helping my new head teacher to get his head around our vacation days, so it is helpful to get a second opinion, thanks ttompatz.

Hmmm, my contract says we have to work some 'special' Saturdays so I guess we are screwed for these next 2 Saturdays. Damn.

yup they all are, so is March 1st, Buddhas B'day (varies by year), Oct 3rd (National Foundation Day) and Christmas. Of course they all have to fall on a M-F to get them this aint the states when if the day is on a Saturday you get Friday or on a Sunday when you get Monday

you my friend are getting screwed

why do people keep taking these jobs?
(then again some univs have to make up those days too but not on a Saturday you work with your students to make them up)

Yeah, I know. Sigh.

I've worked here over a year now and the branch has been pretty decent. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about working the Saturdays except demand extra vacation days for later on.
I am working with some new foreign members of staff who are loathe to rock the boat - if I refuse to turn up they will have to cover my classes etc etc.

It really pisses me off when they pull stunts like this.

What does it say in your contract regarding normal working days? If it says strictly only Mon - Fri then you can decline the bosses offer to work on Saturdays. However if the wording of the contract is loose and it is possible to ask you to work at other days then you my friend are screwed.

In most cases staff must agree to work on a weekend if it is clearly out of their contracts normal working hours.

Yeah, some kind of great holiday when you have to work weekends to make up for it. I'd rather skip the bloody holiday and have my Saturdays free.

Friggin' Asia.

Or you could just not sign contracts that have those clauses in them.
