I'm going back to Canada for a few weeks over Chuseok.
I'm going to bring my Galaxy II with me mainly as a media player, but I'd also like to be able to connect over kakao and some other programs that I can access with Wifi. Is there a way to shut down not just the Data calling but all cellular service and just use it for Wifi so I can access Kakao and that?
I'm just worried that I'll get charged up the wazoo for incoming text messages I never asked for, but would still like to keep in touch with people over Kakao. I've roamed in Japan and the incoming texts that did come in weren't very expensive, but I imagine Canada is a different ballgame since North American carriers are nothing but money grubbing scrubs.
*edit*
Perhaps I was too stupid to think of it. I just tried turning on wifi while in flight mode and it's working! I thought flight mode would completely disable all wireless connections, but it still allows for wifi, awesome stuff! Now I don't have to risk with any potential data/roaming charges! |

I did with my Galaxy S1 (in the USA, but I'm sure Canada is the same).
On SK, I was immediately sensed by the local network affiliated with SK in my home area. I got messages in Korean saying I could pay for a day pass for some amount like 12,000 won or so if I wanted to use it to receive texts. I opted not to. I forget the actual cost. That was just for receiving, if memory serves. It asked me if I wanted to join about every day.
If you want to be really safe, you can remove your Sim card and still use wifi with no connection to any actual phone network. Then you have no worries for sure. I did this and my phone wifi speed went up x5, actually. Put it back in later, and all is like normal.
Be careful not to lose your phone, though. I did as we exited the last plane, and was darn lucky the plane was there overnight for maintenance, so I was able to drive back and get it late at night. Very lucky. It must have fell out of my pocket as I was trying to get my daughter under control. |
