Just took a brand new subway car on line 1 and there are no full subway maps. Instead you just get a line map SOMETIMES in between ads on an LCD screen. Next to it is another lcd screen playing only ads. I hate this because I like to look at full size maps to find my way and map my transfers. Never liked the small line maps. the full size maps on the platforms can be difficult to find, especially when in a hurry.
Apparently advertising is more important now. |

I think they figure tourists will have a map and anyone living here has a map on their phone.

And if not, 80% of the advertisements are for phones that have maps on them. |

Cognitive Maps are the best! (i.e. the mental maps in our heads)
Put a map on your bedroom wall and peruse it everyday. Or why not put a map on the back of your bathroom door so you can study it every time you take a dump!
You'll have a fully comprehensive cognitive map in no time, just like a London cabbie! |

Since there's actually little advertising on the subway here--a big wasted opportunity IMO--I think it's more about installing some sort of new technology that someone--friend, relative, anyone with a thick white envelope--can sell the subway system. Plus any change, whether it's necessary, a good idea, etc., is of high value in Korea.
So lots and lots of new monitors replacing old ones that are still up and the subway raises fares. |

I took some of the maps off the older subways as a souvenier when I left. Also got some really cool posters of the KTX, and one of those picture posters telling people what not to do on the subway. The funniest one is the one that tells men not to grope the womens. Funny. |
