Depends on your state.

Some will only apostille the original and it has to be notarized by your university registrar. My degree is from KS but I'm from AR. The Sec of State for AR accepted a notarized copy from an AR notary of my diploma and apostilled it. My advice: call your Sec. of State ASAP and get confirmation from them.

You don't need to mail it to DC, just figure out what the rules of your state are. Best of luck to you!

You can get the degree apostille from the state where the school is located. The idea of apostilles in the first place is that an authority in the location issuing the document duly swears that said document is authentic. Therefore, if your university is in Illinois, like mine, an Illinois authority apostilles its degrees as genuine. The Illinois authority wouldn't have anything to say about a degree from Massachusetts. Some states will do degrees from anyplace [maybe California?], but the safest way is to use the state where the school is.

The reason you send FBI CBCs to be Federally apostilled is because they are Federal documents, transcending any single state.

Thanks chaps, looks like I can have it overnighted to Tallahassee and hopefully get it back on Saturday after I get it notarized today.

Another option is just to order an original copy of your diploma from your university. Mine cost $35 and came pretty quickly and now I have an extra to use for things like getting a visa in Korea.

I got my diploma from Florida, but currently reside in Hawaii. I hope they are able to apostille the diploma. I thought you had to have the apostilled copy and can not submit them the original.

So you use one in lieu of an apostilled copy? Why not just use the one you have? Why do you need 2? You could order a second when you use up your first (like a carton of milk).

As far as I can recall I had someone at the UPS place in the city of West Virginia I was in notarize a copy of my diploma. I mailed that with a form to the capitol. This was done in the state where I obtained my diploma. I don't think you can do this in another state where you didn't get that diploma unless I am wrong. It can be a hassle because people go to other states after they graduate.

In MO I had an original degree, but to get the apostille, they made me get ANOTHER diploma from the university with some kind of stamp on the back saying it's legit.. lame

You can't do that anymore, however. The new regulations require an apostilled copy.

I just got a visa in July with my original copy. Maybe it was because I'm a certified teacher so they assumed my diploma was legit... who knows.

In response to an earlier comment: I got a spare so that if they lose it (which happens) or if it gets damaged, I still have my nice original copy. Smile

I never heard of Korea accepting original degrees recently. They require an apostille. However, there are exceptions. I wouldn't take the risk, personally, and do what they ask because that could be used later to reject the application.

I am switching public schools and came home for two months in the summer and I am going back to Korea on the 30th. However my coteacher went into immigration office today and said that my copy of my university degree was not apostiled. Does the apostille need to be from the FEDS or just from the STATE? It took FOREVER to get the apostiile for my criminal background check from the feds, however I remember for my last contract I only had to get my copy of the university degree from the state. Does anyone know for sure?

Americans only please, sorry I just don't want to go on assumptions with this.

Just the State. And doesn't have to be the state you got the diploma from. But the notary public and the apostille have to be from the same state.

I got my diploma copy notarized at Bank of America in Chesapeake, and I'm sending it to the Secretary of State in Richmond. But the diploma itself is from Washington State.

Even if you wanted to do it in DC, it's a different office from the one you did your CBC in. Trust me. I tried to walk-in both the CBC and my diploma at the DOS. They don't do the diploma there.

Your diploma is not a federal document.

A state apostille worked for me. After you get it notarized, you still have to get a certificate from the county clerk from the town in which it was notarized certifying it's all legit.

You don't need to get a federal apostille, and you don't need to get an apostille in the state in which the diploma was issued (unless it's the original diploma, which you shouldn't be using anyway because IT'S YOUR DIPLOMA and you only get one). Bring your diploma to any UPS location, have them make a notarized copy of it, and then get the notarized copy apostilled at your Secretary of State. It's super easy, and you can do it same-day!
