I kid you not. This is an actual article just published in the Guardian (and as far as I can tell, it's not even a spoof)...

we dont need to worry about Aliens destroying us, we will destroy ourselves soon enough.
If there are Aliens out there watching us, they probably have a dead pool. |

3 of humanity's defining characteristics: we make tools, we kill off the males of rival tribes to secure our genetic advantage (i.e. we make war), and we make fire. Given that we keep making better and better tools for the purpose of making war and burning things, it's almost inevitable that we will keep killing and burning until we are totally screwed. The traits that have made us evolutionarily successful are the very same ones that will drive us extinct.  |

Whilst I certainly do not hope that Humanity be plundered and destroyed by an alien species, we could have absolutely no complaint if we were.
Such is the inevitability of the Survival of the Fittest!
We could, perhaps, fire our nuclear missiles at them and hope for the best, but if we were soundly defeated, the aliens would be entitled to not a penny less of their rightfully accrued loot. With a little bit of luck, however, the aliens will be peaceful and venerate the ways of exchange and reciprocity. But if not, they would only be doing what humans have done to other animals, and to each other, for millions of years and there's no reason at all why we should be exempt from the ways of the world.
No belief could be more insane than that of supposing Mother Nature has a special place in her heart for Humanity and Earth. |
