|
|
Purchased a new macbook, giving my new wife the one I had used so she can have a comp for her own work (and iPad) however I wanted to give Windows 7 a try.
Stopped by PixDix, fair enough- there were the boxes of Win 7 lined up, Professional, 32 bit (more on this later). Its in Korean. Price tag was 240,000.
Get home, I decide that I'd prefer it with English details. Check the web to learn they are selling it online from Amazon at $140? This is for 64 bit and Ultimate costs only $180. Is there some massive Customs surcharge if ordered from overseas? Why the huge markup? Should I deal with PixDix or is there another (legit) store with a (legit) copy of Win 7?
Also- is 32 bit enough? I don't plan on using it for much more than Office, internet banking and Korean websites. Don't want to allocate more than 1GB ram to it, as most of my energy will be for the mac itsself. |

Not really answering your question, but I recently found out that only Windows 7 Ultimate allows you to change your language setting. |

There are 2 types of Windows software. One is RETAIL which is around $240.
The cheaper one is the OEM version. The difference between the 2 is that one comes in a box with a manual, the other in just a CD case.
The OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium in Korea is around $150. I bought my English copy on Gmarket.
On a side note, most things Computer Related have 2 prices, the Retail, and the OEM. OEM is almost always cheaper because it doesn't come with a fancy box, extra software, etc.... |

@pkang
Thanks, but this was an OEM version of the software!
PixDix seems to be ripping people off |

Don't let them sell you 32-bit. You'll regret it later. It's not just the no-more-than-3.2GB issue............it's also because 64-bit has become, or is becoming, the industry standard so 32-bit drivers will become less and less available in the forthcoming years. |

Thanks eamo. I'm going to return it tonight.
Considering purchasing Win 7 off Amazon. I can get it in Ultimate for an extra 8 bucks. Go figure |

My new machine has Windows 7 Home... and I was frustrated by the Korean thing.
Until a web search found a free program called Vistalizator, designed for changing Windows Vista and 7 languages without the Ultimate upgrade.
Basically, it uses an official Microsoft language file to change the language.
It is slightly imperfect. I have to change back to Korean every couple of months or so to use Windows Update. It doesn't work with the English. Other than that, it's been great. |

It should also be noted that OEM licenses cannot be transferred to another PC. So if you install the oem version and register on one PC and decide to "move" the license to another PC, you're outta luck. With retail, you can do the above...
